State University where she received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1949, then attended Michigan State University where she worked on her master’s degree in nutrition.

In the early1950s, she was hired to set up and manage the cafeteria at Jerusalem Elementary school. Known as “The Book Lady,” she tutored students in reading and math for more than 20 years and volunteered for 15 years, reading daily to school children. She also served as a substitute teacher in the district. She was an Oregon City School Board member from 1993 until her death in 2009.

Due to her work with children and her dedication to the Oregon School District, the new Coy Elementary School Library was named in her honor.

Betty was also known by many as “The Tree Lady” for her generosity of 40 years in giving many Oregon-Jerusalem first-graders a tree seedling to plant. Betty was a long-time trustee of the USDA Lucas County Conservation Service, which resulted in the planting of thousands of additional trees. In her honor, the Mayor of Oregon proclaimed April 30, 2010 as Betty Carstensen Memorial Arbor Day.

Betty supported the arts through her membership in the Oregon Community Theater and was an inspiration to all who met her.
