Penta seeking outstanding alumni for 2010 awards
Penta Career Center is seeking nominations for its annual Outstanding Alumni Awards.

The Outstanding Alumni Awards are bestowed to individuals who have completed a career-technical program at Penta Career Center, formerly known as Penta County Vocational School, and who are currently working in a successful career. Nominees must have completed a high school or adult education program at Penta before 2000.

Applications are available by calling 419-661-6360 or may be downloaded from the Penta website at www.pentacareercenter.org (click on “Alumni”). The deadline for completed applications is Aug. 20.

Since their inception in 1993, these prestigious awards have been presented to 105 Penta alumni. Recipients of the 2010 awards will be honored at a banquet at the high school on Nov. 4.

Success Fest
Area residents interested in taking college classes or starting a new career this

fall are invited to attend Success Fest Week at Owens Community College, July 26 to 31. Fall semester classes begin Aug. 16.

For added convenience, Owens will be open for extended hours from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Additionally, students may register from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. The Owens Toledo-area Campus is located on Oregon Road in Perrysburg Township.

Owens will also host Success Fest Week July 26 to 30 at the Learning Center at The Source, located on Monroe Street in downtown Toledo. Students may register between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

Owens’ Arrowhead Park Learning Center will host Success Fest Week, July 26 to 30. The Arrowhead Park Learning is on Indian Wood Circle in Maumee. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

Those attending Success Fest Week can learn about Owens’ academic program offerings, obtain academic advising, complete electronic financial aid, learn about deferred payment plans, and select their classes with the help of the college’s staff representatives.

Northwood 30th reunion
Northwood High School class of 1980 will celebrate their 30-year class reunion the weekend of Aug. 27 to 29.

The weekend will kick off with a tailgate party Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the high school. The alumni will have reserved seating at the Rangers home opener against Lakota, and then enjoy a post-game celebration at Buffalo Wild Wings on Navarre Avenue in Oregon.

The highlight of the weekend will be a reunion banquet from 5:30 to 11 p.m. Saturday. The evening will begin with a cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m. and buffet dinner catered by Michael’s at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $39 per person.  On Sunday, there will be a gathering at the German American Festival at Oak Shade Grove. All NHS graduates are welcome. Look for the “NHS Class of 1980” sign.

Small Business Basics seminars
The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Terra Community College is offering free two-hour seminars, “Small Business Basics,” designed to answer questions about starting, buying or expanding a small business.

Participants will learn the basics of name registration, licensing, taxes, zoning, business entities, employees, insurance, financing and business planning, among other topics.

The August schedule includes:
Aug. 4 – 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Ottawa County Improvement Corporation (conference room), 8043 W. SR 163, Oak Harbor.

Aug 25 – 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Terra Community College (Building B, Room 101), 2830 Napoleon Rd., Fremont.  The events are free and open to the public. Tools for School
The Salvation Army-Port Clinton Service Unit is now accepting applications for the Tools for School program, which assists local families in financial need of school supplies and book bags.

Applications for the program can be picked up and dropped off through Aug. 31 at the local Salvation Army office located at The Sutton Center, 1854 E. Perry St., Suite 800, Port Clinton. Supplies and book bags will be distributed at the office in August.

This program is supported by The Ottawa County Community Foundation, The Harry Stensen Memorial Fund and local donations.

Backpack to the Future
Owens Community College’s Alumni Association is organizing a gently used backpack drive.

Through the “Backpack to the Future” effort, the students are accepting gently used or new backpacks and new school supplies from area residents during the summer months. Items collected will be given to low-income elementary school children throughout Northwest Ohio.

In addition to backpacks, donations of crayons, markers, bottles of glue, glue sticks, colored pencils, pencils, pink erasers, school boxes, pocket folders, marbled covered composition books and Kleenex tissues are sought. Donations may be brought to the Office of Alumni Relations on the Toledo-area Campus in Perrysburg Township.

Alumni attend reunion
The 53rd reunion of Woodville High School was held July 2 at the Elmore Legion Hall.

Fourteen of the 26 classmates attended. Alumni attended from Woodville, Pemberville, Gibsonburg and Genoa, as well as from Florida, Arizona and Pennsylvania. Three of the class members are deceased.

In addition, two teachers, Kermit (Doris) Hoesman, of Woodville, and Eloise Reitzel, from Pemberville attended.


Frugal, Cool, Back to School
The Rossford Library will host a “Frugal, Cool, Back to School” program Aug. 9 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s community room.

The program will be presented by Candy Huner, author of the online blog, “Deal with it Simply,” and Paula Wethington, journalist from the Monroe Evening News’ “Monroe on a Budget.”

In light of the tough economy, the women began sharing innovative money-saving tips and tricks with their readers. The pair will focus on ways to save when shopping for school supplies, school clothes, lunches and other expenses relating to going back to school.

40th reunion planned
The Genoa High School Class of 1970 will hold their 40th reunion Oct. 16 at the Holiday Inn Express in Perrysburg. Rooms have been reserved for alumni.

Green Industry seminar set
Area residents and business professionals within the landscape, garden center, tree care and turf industry interested in expanding their knowledge about horticulture are invited to attend the 2010 Northwest Ohio Green Industry Summer Session at Owens Community College on Aug. 4.

Presented by Owens, in conjunction with The Ohio State University Extension/ABE Center in Bowling Green, the workshop will be held from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Audio/Visual Classroom Center.
