The International Boxing Club and Learning Center, located at 1717 Adams St. in downtown Toledo, is opening a Vocational Training Center.
This project was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Toledo Rotary Foundation.
IBC Executive Director Harry Cummins, an East Toledo native, says the center will offer young men and women the opportunity to gain new, marketable skills in construction, electrical installation and plumbing.
“They will work with adult mentors who are employed in the industry to build walls, lay floors, install drywall, paint/finish walls, plumb pipes/systems, install electrical systems and frame a model “home” (smaller than a normal residence) in the first year of the program,” according to Cummins.
“The first model will be built on-site in our Vocational Training Center and will remain as a teaching tool. In the future, we may build other sheds/model homes that can be sold to local non-profit organizations to realize service generated income for the program,” he said. “All Vocational Training Center activities will be coordinated and conducted in an environment where safety is a paramount, oversight by adult role models is constant, and emphasis is placed on doing quality work, every time.”
The project is supported by Lucas County Administrator Peter Ujvagi; Marilyn Jacobs, of the Department of Labor; and City Councilman Mike Craig.
