“Stimulus-funded” construction program graduates 14
Fourteen participants of the newly created Constructing Futures program celebrated their accomplishments at a graduation ceremony June 15 at Penta Career Center in Perrysburg.

“We are so proud of this group,” said Kristan Dewey, of Northwest Ohio Construction Education Center. “We want the community to know that there is now available a set of newly educated workers ready for apprenticeships in the construction industry.”

The program was made possible by funding from the American Recovery and Re-investment Act (ARRA), known as stimulus funds, through the Ohio Governor’s office. Instructors included instructors from Penta Career Center Adult Education, Four-County Career Center, and WSOS Family Advocates Karey George and Jarmain Stills.

Participants, which included dislocated, unemployed and underemployed workers, were schooled in math, leadership and life skills, work ethic, job readiness and financial literacy, critical thinking skills as well as blueprint reading, Labor 101, computer fundamentals, and safety training.

Graduates will seek apprenticeships with union construction contractors. While these graduates move on to the next level of the program, apprenticeship, a new class is forming and will begin instructions in July.

For more information on how to participate in the next class, or on the graduation, call 419-578-1802 or 419-578-1809.

Terra KidsCollege
KidsCollege at Terra Community College this summer will offer young students the opportunity to cook, paint, design games and build their own robot. This year’s session will run July 19-22.

One highlight of this year’s KidsCollege session is Lego Mini Robots, lead by Chris Michael of the Girl Scouts. Students will build their own mini robot using Legos and program it to perform multiple functions to overcome obstacles in a fun competition. The class combines math, science and technology for girls and boys.

“Participants will complete two major tasks - build a robot and actually program it to complete tasks,” said Christine Michael, membership development specialist with the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio.

“They have a lot of fun as they design and build the robot which might use multiple motors, hydraulics, and sensors. Each task may require a change in design, so they become engineers. Everyone will get the opportunity to program the robot as they try to complete different tasks,” she said.
