Safety Town signups Oregon Safety Town, a safety awareness program designed for children entering kindergarten, will be held June 8-19 at 8 or 10:30 a.m. and June 21-July 1 at 9 a.m.
Classes will be held at Starr Elementary School in Oregon. The program is open to children from Oregon and surrounding communities.
Registration forms are available at the Oregon Branch Library, 3341 Dustin Rd. or at Oregon Schools’ kindergarten registrations.
Book Nook dedication The community is invited to the dedication of a Book Nook at Jerusalem Elementary School in honor of the late Betty Carstensen the late Betty Carstensen, a long time Oregon school board member, April 30 at 2 p.m.
In observance of Arbor Day, each student will receive a seedling tree, courtesy of the Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District.
Carstensen was a strong proponent of literacy education and spent many hours volunteering her time reading to elementary students. In addition, she was fondly known by many as the “Tree Lady.” She was a leading proponent of tree planting and tree education while serving the Jerusalem and Oregon communities for over 50 years.

• May 19 – 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., “Get a Job or a Better Job POD.” A review of unemployment services provided by the state, information about other community resources and a free lunch.

Free Career Planning Workshop, April 26 Area residents are invited to explore career options and gain advice on making the first steps toward a new career as the Owens Community College Learning Center at The Source presents a free “Discovering Career Choices” Career Exploration Workshop Monday, April 26.
The one-hour seminar will be held from 11 a.m. to noon in room 105 at the College’s Learning Center at The Source on Monroe Street in downtown Toledo. The workshop is free and open to the public, however, registration is required due to space limitations.
Attendees will explore various career paths by participating in a personal interest inventory program designed to match identified interests with occupations and potential educational majors.

Free safety training Safety by Design” is the theme for the 2010 Safety Day to be sponsored by the Sandusky and Ottawa County Safety Councils May 12 at Terra Community College.
Topics for the break-out sessions include employee wellness programs, workers’ compensation, emergency response, hazardous dust, electrical safety, and more as well as a Drug-Free Workplace Refresher for Supervisors. Speakers are coming from OSHA, Ohio BWC, local county agencies, and other industry leaders.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided courtesy of the Sandusky and Ottawa County Safety Councils. The event’s keynote speaker, presented during breakfast, will be Scott Brown.

Small Business Basics The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Terra Community College is offering free, two-hour seminars, “Small Business Basics,” that will answer questions about starting, buying or expanding a small business.
This seminar will take the confusion out of your efforts and help you avoid costly mistakes and unnecessary steps. Learn the basics of: name registration, licensing, taxes, zoning, business entities, employees, insurance, financing and business planning.

Rotary endows Owens scholarship The Rotary Club of Perrysburg and its Foundation presented the Owens Community College Foundation with a $20,000 donation to provide Penta Career Center graduates the opportunity to pursue their academic and career aspirations.
The donation will be used to grow the recently-established scholarship program to $40,000 of endowed funds.
Last November, Owens and the Rotary of Club Perrysburg announced the establishment of the new endowed scholarship program with an initial Rotary Club donation of $20,000.
The scholarship will be awarded to a Penta Career Center high school graduate from Perrysburg, Lake or Rossford High School who has completed at least a two-year program at the school while maintaining a 2.0 cumulative grade point average. Scholarships will not have a stated amount, but are intended to fund the attainment of an associate’s degree from Owens.
