The East Toledo Family Center provides a wide range of programs and services, which have grown and changed over the years to adapt to the needs of the community.
As it celebrates its 110th anniversary, the center provides more programs than at any other time in its long history
The programs and services are designed to help the ETFC fulfill its mission of enhancing the lives of individuals and families by:
• Building strong family units within the community;
• Assisting seniors in maintaining independent lifestyles;
• Preparing young people to do well in school, developing and fostering good character, and helping them become productive members of society;
• Coordinating services and cooperating with other agencies to improve the quality of life in the community.
Program highlights include:
Preschool In conjunction with Head Start, the East Toledo Family Center offers preschool classes to all 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds. The children in preschool are supervised by early childhood education professionals dedicated to the developmental enrichment of young children. The Center offers full-day classes for working families for those who qualify for ODJFS, half-day morning or afternoon classes for those who qualify for Head Start or ODJFS. Before & After School Childcare The Kids Kare Program offers affordable, quality childcare for school-age children. The Before School Program is offered from 6 to 9 a.m., and the After School program runs from 3 to 6 p.m., with transportation provided to and from each of the East Toledo elementary schools. Childcare is also provided to those who are registered when TPS is closed for teacher workdays and vacation during the school year. Children may be enrolled throughout the school year. Tutoring The East Toledo Family Center offers one-on-one tutoring for students in K-12 in all subjects except foreign languages. The program runs September through May. One-hour sessions are available two days per week. During the sessions, the tutor provides homework help and skill-building support. Space is limited. Call 419-691-1429 to sign up.
Phoenix Academy Phoenix Academy, a charter school sponsored by Toledo Public Schools, offers an alternative path to high school graduation through NovaNet, a personal learning program that offers flexible scheduling, independent study and a unique curriculum. The program is offered at ETFC weekdays. For enrollment information, call 419-720-6377.
GED preparation The East Toledo Family Center partners with Penta Career Center to offer a basic skills class to help individuals prepare for the GED test. For more information call, 419-661-6555.
Help Me Grow The Help Me Grow program works with families that have children ages birth to 3. The program provides parent support, parent education, service coordination and other needed services. For more information, 419- 691-1429, ext. 241.
Shots for Tots Shots for Tots clinics are held every fourth Tuesday of the month at the Family Center. Call 419-213-4121 for more information.
Changes for Life Changes for Life is a collaboration of community organizations. The program is committed to helping teen parents and their families by connecting them to the necessary programs and/or services that will benefit them the most. The agencies pull together to help families learn skills to improve their lives by developing their own plan for success. For details, call Nicole at 419-691-2254.
Supervised Visits The Family Center provides a safe and family-oriented atmosphere for non-custodial parents to visit with their children. Scheduling must be done in advance and is based on space available at the Center. Call 419- 691-1429 ext. 223 to set up a visit.
Financial Stability Collaborative The Financial Stability Collaborative offers clients two services – mentoring and education. One-on-one mentoring and goal setting is provided by center advocates and is designed to assist individuals in making positive changes to improve their financial situation.
The personalized service offers support through the process of changing one’s approach to managing finances. Mentoring sessions are available at least two times per month. The program also offers various classes at a variety of area business and public meeting places. Classes offered include Job Preparedness, Internet Job Search, Interview Skills, Online Selling, Managing Benefits, and Foreclosure Prevention, among others. FEMA The Family Center provides east Toledo residents with emergency food when available. It is advised that those desiring help call ahead at 419-691-1429.
Summer Camp Summer Camp at the East Toledo Family Center is designed to meet the needs of parents who wish to provide a safe, stimulating, and fun environment for their children in the summer months. Activities include arts and crafts, group games, swimming and field trips. Camp is open to children 3 to 12 from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday (all younger children must be toilet-trained.) Open registration begins at the end of April. Space is limited. East Toledo Senior Activities Center The East Toledo Senior Activities Center, located at 1001 White St., provides a variety of programs, activities and services.
A Housekeeping, Lawn Care & Snow Removal Services are available to East Toledo and Oregon residents who are at least 60 years of age.
The program is funded, in part, through grants from the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio. Participants receive help with such chores as lawn care, landscaping, snow removal, light housekeeping, interior painting and other minor home repairs.
The center also offers information and referrals, health screenings, daily hot lunches, escort services (to the bank, grocery store, post office, etc.), assistance with PASSPORT/Medicaid/Choices, as well as crafts, bingo and card-playing, guest speakers and day and overnight trips.
50-plus athletic programs are also available, including basketball, volleyball, a senior softball league and more.
