• Also in April, the Ohio Health Association honored Mercy St. Charles Hospital with a Melvin Creeley Environmental Leadership Award. Over the years, the hospital has implemented a number of “green initiatives” most notably committing to recycle 35 percent of total waste volume – a feat achieved in 2010. St. Charles was the first facility in Lucas County to have a LiveRoof – which is expected to last about 40 years – twice as long as a traditional roof.

• Two St. Charles employees were honored as finalists at the Northwest Ohio Healthcare Heroes Awards Reception on June 29. Jennifer Henkle, RN, a palliative care nurse and Kent Meyers, Director of Facilities and Environmental Services, where honored for their outstanding work at St. Charles, as well as, their contribution to the broader community.

The imaging is the standard for all patients scheduling their mammogram at a Mercy St. Charles or Mercy St. Anne beginning in January 2012.

ProMedica Bay Park
At ProMedica Bay Park, the Sleep Disorders Center was successfully relocated to the Garden level of the hospital. The first patient was tested Dec. 18. The relocation freed up much-needed space in the hospital’s Medical/Surgical unit.

Other highlights from 2011 include:
• At the end of December, the Bay Park Diagnostic Center located in Rossford was relocated to a new building at the intersection of Lime City Road and Grassy Lane (approximately a mile south of the former location). The new testing center, which shares space with Becky Marshall, DO, is almost twice as large and includes ample parking. Testing services were expanded to include DEXA (bone density) scanning. Other services include radiology exams, ultrasound, mammography and lab services.

• Hospital staff continue to work with an architect to complete the design of a new Intensive Care Unit. The plan calls for the completion of this project by the end of 2012. The new unit will be approximately 10,000 square feet.

• Flooring in the 2300 wing of the hospital was replaced in December. This completes the replacement plan for all flooring in the hallways of all inpatient care areas.

• The hospital relocated and expanded the Emergency Department Triage area from one to three beds. The project included relocating the hospital chapel to the second floor of the hospital.

• Bay Park began using InTouch, a video conferencing system that gives female patients in Port Clinton access to breast care specialists at the Breast Care Center at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, The technology allows a physician who has found something of concern on a mammogram or other test to speak face-to-face with the patient.

• In April, Bay Park received the 2011 Partner for Change Award from Practice Greenhealth, a national membership organization for healthcare facilities committed to environmentally responsible operations. The award honors outstanding environmental achievements in the healthcare sector.
