WSOS to use fundraising dollars for air conditioners
Written by Tammy Walro
Wednesday, 30 July 2008 13:40

Beginning Monday, July 21, WSOS will use funds from its annual fund-raising account to help area residents stay cool during the summer months.

Residents targeted for this assistance must be 60 years of age and over. These residents will have the option of a one-time payment of $100 toward the electric bill or an air conditioner, whichever is lower. If the resident chooses the air condition, the remaining cost of the air conditioner will be paid from the WSOS fund-raising account. Residents who do not meet the age requirement can still find assistance if they have a member of the household with a medically-certified breathing disorder. These households can receive assistance of up to $100 for electric bill payments.

The Great Black Swamp Frog Base Ball Club will take on the Grasshoppers Aug. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Lutheran Home of Toledo, 2519 Seaman Rd., Toledo, at the corner of Seaman and Wheeling.

The teams play Civil War-era base ball matches using rules codified in 1860. The Frogs wear authentic uniforms of the period modeled after the 1866 Baraboo, Wisc. Base Ball Club uniform.

The Frogs, based in Sylvania, is so named because of the Great Black Swamp that once covered much of Northwest Ohio, and because Toledo was known as Frogtown.

Local author William Riedmaier spoke about his new book, “In the Shadow of the Badge” July 15 at Riverview Health Care Campus’ “Lunch and Learn” Series for the Community.

Audience members were captivated by Riedmaier’s recollections of some of the dangerous situations he encountered as a former deputy of both the Ottawa and Sandusky county sheriff's departments. He explained to the crowd that most days, police work is very routine but that everyone should show respect for law enforcement officers because they put their lives on the line every time they put on a uniform.
