The Clay High Varsity Toboggan team, comprised of graduates from the class of 1969, is returning to Camden, Maine to compete in the U.S. National Toboggan Championships, Feb. 10 to 12.
Last year, team members included Chuck Horvath, Gerry Wilson, Mike Wagner, Steve Ritzenthaler and Mike Searle. This year, two new members are moving up from the “Junior Varsity” – Sue Dubbs Hancock of Indianapolis, Ind., and Ron Klawitter, of Spokane, Wash.

Last year, the team competed in two-man, three-man, and four-man competition, with the four-man team placing
150th out of 400 teams. It should be noted that their time of 9.23 seconds was only 0.5 seconds slower than the winning time, according to Searle.
Speeds in the ice coated toboggan chute run up to 35 to 40 miles per hour, Searle added. The team has built a new toboggan and is looking to bring home the 2012 gold.
