Nominations sought for Senior Hall of Fame
The Ottawa County Senior Activity Committee, under the direction of the Ottawa County Senior Advisory Board, is seeking nominations for its annual induction into the Ottawa County Senior Hall of Fame.

Nomination forms are available at all Ottawa County Senior Centers including centers in Oak Harbor, Elmore and Genoa.

Nominations must be returned to the Ottawa County Senior Resources Office or any Senior Center by April 11. Nomination forms will be reviewed by the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners and the staff of Senior Resources to determine Hall of Fame inductees.

The purpose of the award is to recognize senior volunteers in our community who exemplify a positive image of aging, demonstrating these characteristics through their involvement and contribution to various volunteer activities throughout Ottawa County. Nominations are open to anyone 60 year of age or older who resides in Ottawa County or participated in volunteer activities for any organization in the county.

The Senior Hall of Fame winners will be inducted during Ottawa County’s Spring Senior Day, scheduled for May 11. Award recipients will receive a plaque commemorating their achievement. In addition, their names will also be added to the county plaque, which will hang in the Ottawa County Senior Resources office.

“Where Do I Turn?”
Have you ever been in a situation where you need to find help for yourself or your aging loved ones?

The Wood County Committee on Aging will present “Where Do I Turn?” – a one-stop informational event about resources available for adults in the Wood County community April 12 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bowling Green Parks and Recreation’s Simpson Building, 1291 Conneaut Ave. Lunch will be sponsored by Heritage Corner Health Care Campus.

The event will include speakers, and a panel discussion with representatives from home health care agencies (medical and non-medical), long-term care facilities, assisted living/independent living, hospice, senior centers, Social Security, and Job and Family Services

A highlight will be speaker Dr. Murthy Gokula, geriatrician and assistant professor at the University of Toledo, who will address “The Red Flags of Aging.” Dr. Gokula will discuss the normal aging process and signs that it may be necessary to seek assistance.

Featured speaker Diana Waugh, R.N., BSN author of “I Was Thinking,” will share ways to keep the lines of communication open with loved ones, friends and family members when difficult conversations are necessary. Her discussion will help participants creating “Visits with Value.”

Otterbein breakfast
Who says there’s no such thing as a free breakfast?

Otterbein Portage Valley Retirement Living Communities in Pemberville will host an informational breakfast March 22 at 9:30 a.m. Attendees will learn about Otterbein’s villa homes, garden apartments and nursing/rehab facilties.

Faces of Grief
Sandy Lauer will speak on “The Many Faces of Grief” April 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Auditoriums A and B at St. Luke’s Hospital, Maumee.

Lauer is the author of “The Winding Way: Reflecting on a Journey,” a book of reflections published in 2006. She has a master’s degree in Pastoral Theology, with certifications in grief counseling and thanatology.

The presentation is part of the Bereavement Networking Fair, sponsored by the Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo’s Bereavement Action Committee.

Caregiving web conference
The non-profit National Private Duty Association (NPDA), along with the Ohio Chapter, will host a consumer education web conference entitled “Hiring Home Care Workers: Avoiding Tax and Legal Risks” March 30 at 8 p.m.

The live and interactive program, which will provide advice on reducing risks during the home care hiring process, is free of charge to participants.

“Most seniors want to remain living at home as long as possible. The goal of our upcoming program is to educate families to help them make the best decisions when hiring caregivers for their seniors who need assistance around the house,” said Sheila McMackin, president of NPDA. “Going into this hiring process with a solid foundation of knowledge puts your mind at ease and reduces the potential for tax and legal problems down the road.”

The web conference topics include understanding home care provider hiring guidelines, tax and legal issues, identifying risks and independent contractor issues. Pre-registration for the event is required. Sign up at www.privatedutyhomecare.org.


Collections aid Sacred Heart Home
During Lent, students of the Toledo area Catholic high schools will be holding schoolwide collections of needed nursing and housekeeping items to benefit the elderly residents of the Sacred Heart Home, which is run by the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Over 4,000 students will collect such items as hand sanitizer, body lotion, denture cleaners, toothpaste, deodorant, paper towels, tissues and liquid soap. It is hoped that these items will amount to a whole years supply for the Residents of the Sacred Heart Home.

In return for this act of charity, students that bring in the most items (per homeroom or class levels) will receive Marco’s Pizza certificates, which were donated by Mr. Pat Giamarco of Marcos Pizza Inc.,

Locally, the Little Sisters collection van will be at the schools to pick up the donated items and thank the students at Cardinal Stritch– Kateri Schools on April 15.

Show trip planned
The East Toledo Senior Activities Center, in conjunction with Diamond Tours, will host a show trip to Branson, Mo., May 22-28.

The cost is $625 per person, based on double occupancy. The cost includes motorcoach transportation, six nights lodging including four consecutive nights in Branson, 10 meals, admission to seven shows, including the Brett Family Show, the Twelve Tenors and the Baldknobbers Jamboree Show, among others.

Other senior center events
A two-day Euchre tournament will be held March 28 and 29 at 1001 White St., Toledo. Registration will begin at noon Monday. Play will begin at 12:30 p.m. both days. The cost is $5 per person, which includes refreshments and cash prizes.

The center is accepting donations of spring and summer clothing for all ages, household items, games, knick-knacks, tools, etc., for its annual Rummage Sale, which will be held May 4-6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and May 7 from 9 a.m. to noon ($2-a-bag day).

Appreciation reception
The James Wes Hancock Oregon Senior Center will hold an Appreciation Reception to thank the community for its ongoing support April 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
