Folks 60 and older will find adventure and fun at The Toledo Zoo throughout September and October as the Zoo presents Senior Discovery Days!

Each Tuesday in September and October, Zoo visitors 60 and older receive free admission, giving them an opportunity to explore all that the zoo has to offer, plus they can take behind-the-scenes tours of the zoo’s classic WPA-era buildings, get free health screenings, hear live Big Band music and more.

Each weekday in September and October, seniors can stop by the Timberline Bakery (located in the North Star Trading Post®) and receive a free small coffee and mini muffin. They can also receive discounts on Grandparents Membership and items in the Zoo’s gift shops.

On Saturday, Sept. 20, classic car fans will thrill at the sight of Model T and Model A cars at the Zoo’s Antique Car Showcase.

For visitors with mobility issues who are concerned about the cost of renting a motorized scooter, the Zoo has one heavy-duty motorized scooter available every day that the Zoo is open, at no charge. Reservations must be made in advance and each individual may utilize a free rental only one time per year. Valid identification must be presented before taking the scooter onto Zoo grounds. Call 419-385-5721, ext. 3122 to reserve a scooter at no charge.

The zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located on the Anthony Wayne Trail (US 25), four miles south of downtown Toledo. Lucas County residents are admitted free of charge each Monday from 10 a.m. to noon. ID showing proof of residency is required.

Special tours and activities include:
Sept. 21: Memory Walk. Join the Alzheimer’s Association for their annual walk at the zoo. Call 419-537-1999 for more information.
Sept. 23: Senior Safari. Join the Area Office on Aging of Northwest Ohio for a fun day focused on exercise, health, safety and Zoo exploration. Tickets are required for lunch. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact the Area Office on Aging at 419-382-0624.
Sept. 30: Guided Tour of the Reptile House. Seniors receive free admission. Learn about the history of the building while getting an up-close view of the Zoo's reptile collection. Tour begins at 11 a.m. Meet in the Main Plaza near the Zoo PAL board a few minutes before 11 a.m.
Oct. 7: Swingmania Returns! Seniors receive free admission. Swingmania! is back from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Nairobi Pavilion. It’s another opportunity to listen to all those great American Big Band hits!
Oct. 14: Free Health Screenings & Guided Tour of the Museum. Seniors receive free admission. Toledo Lucas County Health Department’s 60-Plus Program will provide free blood pressure screenings and Harborside Healthcare of Sylvania will offer blood sugar screenings and other health information from 11 a.m.to 2 p.m. in the Arctic Encounter®. At 11 a.m., a guided tour of the Museum of Science and Amphitheatre, two of the five Zoo’s WPA buildings will be offered.
Oct. 21: Free Health Screenings & Guided Tour of the Aviary. Seniors receive free admission. Toledo Lucas County Health Department’s 60-Plus Program and Harborside Healthcare of Sylvania continue their health screenings between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Arctic Encounter®. Also, the final stop on the WPA building tour, the Aviary was renovated in 1998. Its three walk-through habitats – the African Grasslands, Sonoran Desert and Australian Outback – are an experience all their own.
Oct. 28: Free Health Screenings. Seniors receive free admission. Toledo Lucas County Health Department’s 60-Plus Program will and Harborside Healthcare of Sylvania continue health screenings between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Arctic Encounter®.
Guided Tour Schedule: To reserve a spot for a specific tour, please call 419-385-5721 ext. 2110. Tours will meet in front of the Carnivore Café at 10:45 a.m., with all tours beginning at 11 a.m. Each tour or activity will last between 30 and 60 minutes.

Wheelchairs & Motorized Scooters are available to rent. Wheelchairs are $5. Motorized scooters are $20 and must be reserved in advance by calling 419-389-6561.

In addition to the rental fee, an ID will be held until the wheelchair or scooter is returned.
