Genoa Retirement Village residents strike it lucky

GENOA - Residents at Genoa Retirement Village warmed up their arms and tested their skill in preparation for the recent Trilogy Championship Bowling Tournament.

Participants competed in a campus competition, followed by a divisional competition. Genoa Retirement Village is a Trilogy Health Services community. Trilogy currently has 51 health campus locations throughout Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and Michigan. Each campus recruited resident teams and staff teams that competed within their campus. Winners of the campus tournaments advanced to six divisional tournaments. From there six divisional winning resident teams and staff teams advanced to the company-wide championship tournament. Tournament rules include no handicaps, with the scores of the best two out of three games used to determine the winners. The entire team is also required to bowl at the same time.

“Support for the tournament began at the top of our organization with our president, Randy Bufford,” said Genoa Retirement Village Executive Director Julie McKitrick “Our company has been a strong proponent of using the Wii in therapy and activities since last spring when we provided a Wii for each of our health campuses.

“Since that time we’ve incorporated the Wii into our therapy program and activity program in a variety of ways,”
She said. “The advantage of a Wii Bowling Tournament is that it allows individuals of all capabilities to be active and participate, regardless of physical limitations.

“Since the controllers are motion sensitive, residents do not need complex coordination that is required to play other video games. The only requirement is the ability to move their hand and arm - with or without assistance,” she added.

Though the Genoa team didn’t emerge victorious, the participants said they had fun competing and trying an old skill in a new way, while also building a sense of community.

Genoa Retirement Village offers a full range of personalized senior living services, including assisted living; 24-hour skilled nursing care; physical, occupational and speech therapy; as well as Home Again Service, a program that gets patients home faster and stronger.
