Signups under way for E. Toledo Senior Softball Leagues
Signups are under way for the East Toledo Senior Activities Center’s Men’s Senior Softball League.
Registration is broken into three categories - 50 and Over League, 58 and Over League and both. Players who are 58 and over are eligible to be on a team in both leagues. The fee for registrations postmarked by Jan. 31 is $45 or $60 for both leagues. Registrations postmarked between Feb. 1-March 14 will be $50 for one league and $65 for both. Registrations postmarked after March 14 will be assessed a $10 late fee, which must be paid before player is placed on a roster.
Practice will be every Monday and Wednesday beginning April 2 at 6 p.m. A Rules Meeting will be held Wednesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. in the Family Center gym (1020 Varland) for all players and managers. The league games will begin the following week or two after the meeting depending on how many teams are registered

Chili cook off
Local chefs have until Feb. 28 to perfect their favorite chili recipes for entry into the James “Wes” Hancock Oregon Senior Center’s Annual Chili Cook Off, which will be held from 5-8 p.m. at St. Michael’s Centre, 4001 Navarre, Oregon.
Tickets are $6. Prizes will be awarded in various categories including Judges’ Choice, People’s Choice and Best Chili Name.

Travel lectures planned
Travel to exotic places without the hassle of packing a suitcase or leaving behind the comforts of home as the Oregon Senior Center begins a series of virtual trips via guest speakers and accompanying videos.
Tour guides Marge Brown and Lenny Fetterman will lead the first “journey,” which will take participants around the United States, on Friday, Jan. 31 at 12:30 p.m.

Valentine’s Party set
The East Toledo Senior Activities Center will hold its annual Valentine’s Day Party Friday, Feb. 15 beginning at 1 p.m. The cost is $3, which includes games, snacks and prizes.

The Wood County Committee on Aging is offering a reminder that AARP-sponsored tax assistance program will be available Wednesday afternoons and Thursday mornings at the Wood County Senior Center, 305 N. Main St., Bowling Green Feb. 5 through April 10.

Entries are currently being accepted in the Wood County Committee on Aging’s annual poetry contest.
The theme for this year’s contest is, “Life’s Moments.” Co-sponsors for the event are Sunset Retirement Communities and Ashanti Hospice.
The contest is open to Wood County residents age 50 and older. Entries must be handwritten or double-spaced in a 12-point Times New Roman font. All poems must be original works not previously published. Two entries will be accepted per person.
Entries will be judged by a Bowling Green State University writing professor. Prizes will include a $50 gift card for first place and a $25 gift card for second place. All winners will be featured on the WCCOA blog at woodcountycommiteeonaging.blogspot.com. Awards will be presented at a banquet April 29.

Yoga for Arthritis

Golden Oldies Gatherings
Elmore Golden Oldies meet the first Thursday of every month for lunch at The Gathering Room (next to Red, White & Brew).
Lunch is served at noon (lunch will not be available at the Elmore Senior Center that day). Reservations are required by 10 a.m. the Tuesday prior to the luncheon. A set menu is available; no changes or modifications. The menu is available online at http://www.co.ottawa.oh.us/ocseniorresources/.
The suggested donation for lunch is $5 for seniors 60 and older; those under 60 years pay the regular menu price.

50+ Sports Classic
Area athletes age 50 and older who are getting “Olympic fever” are encouraged to mark their calendars for the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio’s 50+ Sports Classic, which will be presented Saturday, June 14 at St. Francis de Sales High School, 2323 W. Bancroft St., Toledo.
The event will include a number of events, including swimming, volleyball, foul shooting, chess/backgammon, track and field events and more.

Better Breathing Club
Individuals with questions about COPD, medications, asthma or pulmonary rehab are invited to attend monthly “Better Breathers Club” programs held at Heartland of Oregon, 3953 Navarre Ave., Oregon.
Meetings will be held Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. Complimentary lunch will be served. The 2014 dates include Jan. 16, Feb. 20, March 20, April 17, May 15 and June 19. January’s topic is,” Disease Review/Overview of Pulmonary Disease.

Heart Health will be the subject of a Lunch Bunch gathering Feb. 6 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church. 215 E. Front St., Perrysburg.
The free event will include lunch and a discussion about heart disease prevention and symptoms, along with heart care. Sponsors include the St. Rose Fab 50+ Club and St. Clare Commons, a Franciscan Living Community located at 12469 Five Point Rd, Perrysburg.
