Oregon Career & Technology Center is currently accepting applications for upcoming winter programs, which are set to start in mid-January.

The center, now located at its new location in the Wynn Center at 5224 Bay Shore Rd., Oregon, offers a wide range of training programs designed to give adults the skills they need to re-enter the workforce or to change careers, according to Brad Luebcke, Supervisor, Adult Workforce Development.

“Now is the time to look at training opportunities and be prepared for positions as they become available in the months to come,” he said.

A complete list of class offerings is available at oregonctc.org.

A sampling includes:
• OCTC offers two administrative assistant programs. The Medical Administrative Assistant Program includes such coursework as Terminology, Transcription, Billing & Coding, Electronic Health Records and more. The Dental Administrative Assistant Program prepares students with skills they will need to enter the dental field in the front office. Computer software skills are also included in these programs. Both programs are 22 weeks long and include a two-week externship.

• The Northwest Ohio Culinary Institute offers students the skills needed to work in the restaurant industry. Students learn about product ID and food equipment; preparation of meats and seafoods, side dishes, small- and large-plate design and more. Participants will also study and test for ServSafe, a nationally recognized credential. The culinary class prepares dinners and works on events throughout the training. The 25-week program is offered in the morning and evening, depending on class size.

• The Early Childhood Development Program is offered to current employees of daycare facilities throughout Lucas County, but also to students interested in this field of work. The program requires 120 hours of classroom time and 480 hours of on-the-job training.

OCTC will place students in a daycare for the hours needed to complete the “Early Childhood Associate” credential and participants will be prepared to test for the credentials after completing the program.

• In addition, OCTC offers an array of short-term trainings in other medical areas such as Pharmacy Technician, Electronic Health Records, Medical Terminology, Medical Billing and Coding and Transcription.

The center also offers CPR Heart Saver, AED, Healthcare Provider and the CPR Instructor Course. The EMT Basic Program is offered twice a year, with the next class starting Jan. 23.

In addition, both 10- and 30-Hour OSHA Training is offered. New this year in the medical area is Phlebotomy, which will tentatively be offered in February.

• OCTC offers OSHA-approved forklift training in its warehouse located in East Toledo, with training offered on both sit-down propane and stand-up electric forklifts.

• The center also offers basic construction trades programs in framing, roofing, siding, drywall, and electrical. “This training gives students a basic idea of what they may be interested in pursuing with one of the local apprenticeship programs or for the do-it-yourselfer wanting the basic knowledge for that home project,” Luebcke said. • An array of computer and special interest programs are offered at the center in the evening. Computer classes include Fundaments, Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, and Basic Web Design.

Selling on eBay is a popular class that gives students the basics of selling and buying online.

“We have partnered with WGTE in Toledo to offer four new technology opportunities, including iPad and Kindle training programs,” Luebcke said. Both of these technology trainings will be held at the WTGE station in Toledo. In addition, OCTC offers several special interest classes throughout the year. New Interest classes this year include Quilting, and Rug Braiding. Other offerings include Woodcarving, Floral Design, Ballroom Dancing, Zumba, Yoga, Kickboxing, Self-defense, and more.
