Waggoner named Penta Teacher of the Year
Rick Waggoner, of Gibsonburg, has been named the 2011 Penta Career Center Teacher of the Year.

Waggoner, who has been the instructor of Floral Design/Greenhouse Production at Penta since 1988, was selected by his peers for his ability to inspire students, his involvement in school and community activities and his philosophy of education.

A 1979 graduate of Wooster High School and Wayne County Career Center, he earned an associate’s degree in greenhouse production at The Ohio State University/Agricultural Technical Institute. He also has a bachelor’s degree in horticulture and a master’s degree in agriculture education from OSU.

Waggoner is a member of the Ohio Florist Association and is active with FFA, a student leadership organization.

Each year, Penta Career Center selects one educator as Teacher of the Year. The honoree is then nominated by Penta for the Ohio Teacher of the Year award.


Woodmore fee collection
Woodmore Elementary School will be collecting 2011-2012 school fees Aug. 16 and 17 from 1 to 7 p.m.

The required forms will be available at the Woodville and Elmore libraries starting the week of Aug. 1. Completed forms should be brought when paying fees.


Christian Academy enrolling
Ottawa County Christian Academy in Oak Harbor is enrolling students for the 2011-12 school year.

The private, non-chartered Baptist school, a ministry of Grace Baptist Church, is located between SR 163 and SR 105 just past Oak Harbor High School.

The school currently has openings in all grade levels. A member of the American Association of Christian Schools and the Buckeye Association of Christian Schools, the academy is a “section 08” institution, meaning it follows state guidelines for attendance and academics set forth by the ODE’s Minimum Standards.

Those interested in enrollment may call the school office at 419-898-3888 to request an application.


School supply drive
Owens Community College’s Alumni Association is conducting its annual “Backpack to the Future” school supply drive to help area children in need get ready for the upcoming school year.

Local drive collection points include the college’s Office of Alumni Relations; Genoa Bank branches at 801 Main St., Genoa; 3201 Navarre Ave., Oregon; 24950 W. SR 51, Millbury and 9920 Old US 20, Rossford and Books-A-Million in Levis Commons in Perrysburg, among others.

Items that will be accepted as part of the school supply drive are gently used or new backpacks, crayons, markers, glue (bottles and sticks), colored pencils, pencils, pink erasers, school boxes, pocket folders, marbled covered composition books and tissues.

Since establishing the program in 2004, the Owens Alumni Association has given over 1,930 backpacks and over 34,410 school supplies to benefit disadvantaged children throughout Northwest Ohio.

Outstanding alumni sought
Penta Career Center is searching for nominees for its annual Outstanding Alumni Awards.

The awards are bestowed to individuals who have completed a career-technical program at Penta and who are currently working in successful careers. Nominees must have completed a high school or adult education program at Penta before 2001.

Applications are available by calling 419-661-6351, or via download from the Penta web site at www.pentacareercenter.org (click on “Alumni”).  

The deadline for completed applications is Aug. 25. Award recipients will be honored at a special banquet at the school Nov. 3.
