Area students earn degrees
In a collaborative program between Terra and Lorain County community colleges, five area students received Associate of Applied Science in Clinical Laboratory Science degrees during a ceremony May 7 in Lorain.

The graduates include Latisha Bulger, Dedra Collins and Jacqueline Conrad, all of Fremont; Sabrina Dobbelare of Oak Harbor; and Michelle Jackson of Genoa.

Bulger and Dobbelare completed their clinical experience at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton; Collins completed hers at Memorial Hospital in Fremont; Conrad at Mercy Tiffin; and Jackson, at ProMedica Health Systems of Toledo.

Scholarships
The East Toledo Club presented scholarships to two local students. The $250 scholarships were presented to:

Jeremy Alan Piper, of Toledo, who will attend The University of Toledo, where he will study accounting. Piper volunteered his time at the Cherry Street Mission, and helped collect boxes for the food pantry at Unity United Methodist Church.

Claudia Ortega Romero, also of Toledo, will attend UT, where she will study criminal justice. Romero has been involved in the YWCA’s T.O.P. (Teen Outreach Program), in which youths participate in community service projects.

Several local students were among high school seniors recently were honored by Owens Community College’s Board of Trustees for their outstanding achievements, receiving scholarships through the Trustees’ Academic Excellence Scholarship Program.

Students receiving a Trustees’ Academic Excellence Scholarship and their intended course of study at Owens include:

Alyssa Wlodarz of Oregon, a Cardinal Stritch High School graduate (nuclear medicine);

Alexandra Zunk of Oregon, a Clay High School graduate (dental hygiene);

Brice Bassett of Bradner, an Eastwood High School graduate (CAD technology);

John Romstadt of Toledo, a Northwood High School graduate (business);

Justin Velliquette of Oak Harbor, an Oak Harbor High School graduate (financial services sales);

Katelyn Jackson of Elmore, a Woodmore High School graduate (radiography).

Defiance College recently announced scholarship awards for the 2011-2012 academic year. Among the awardees was David Jacobs, of Elmore, who was awarded the Dean’s Scholarship. Jacobs a student at Woodmore High School, is involved with baseball, golf, National Honors Society, teen advisory group, Spanish club, Lutheran youth organization and Key club.

Ryan Nelson, of Oregon, was also awarded the Dean’s Scholarship. A student at Clay High School, Nelson is involved in soccer, tennis, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Strive and National Honors Society.

Owens Community College student Amy Everett, of Millbury, took second place for her digital photograph “Gabe One” at the annual Juried Student Art Exhibition held at the Walter E. Terhune Art Gallery.

A jury comprised of area artists and professionals selected the winning entries based on creative excellence. The show featured 97 pieces of artwork in the categories of fine art, photography and commercial art. Fifty-seven students enrolled within Fine and Performing Arts courses at Owens had artwork accepted for the show.

Austin Holmes, 14, formerly of Toledo and Sylvania, Ohio has been awarded a three-year full ride college scholarship to the Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Mich. his academic achievements and leadership skills.

Austin will attend Kalkaska High School, Kalkaska, Mich. in September. He is the son of Joe and Dawn Grant and the late George Holmes and grandson of Debbie Holmes, Walbridge.


Inducted
Owens Community College students were recently honored for their academic accomplishments in business, earning membership into the Kappa Beta Delta International Honor Society.

Selection criterion for students into Kappa Beta Delta is based upon completing a minimum of 15 semester hours of credit and achieving a minimum 3.5 grade point average, among other areas.

The inductees for the 2010-11 academic year include Katie Blum of Millbury (undecided), Terri Leary of Pemberville (undecided), Anna Christen of Curtice (accounting), Joseph Mackey of Curtice (business management), Eric Taylor of Curtice (information systems) and Kenneth Hall of Oregon (pre-business administration),


Honor society inductee
Washburn University distance education student Kathleen Fowler, of Oak Harbor, is one of 36 undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students recently inducted into Lambda Nu, the national honor society for radiologic and imaging sciences.

Fowler is a senior and is pursuing a bachelor of health science degree in medical imaging and a certificate in radiation therapy.

The goals of Lambda Nu are to foster academic scholarship at the highest academic levels, promote research and investigation in the radiologic and imaging sciences and recognize exemplary scholarship.


Scholar
Kelsey McCloskey, of Northwood, has accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She will be honored during an induction convocation this fall on the campus of The University of Toledo.

NSCS is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and is the nation’s only interdisciplinary honors organization for first- and second-year college students.


Master’s degree
Jason Mlynek, a 2005 graduate of Clay High School, received a master’s degree in Arts Management from Heinz School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in May 14. Mlynek resides in New York City and is working at Columbia Artists as a booking agent.

His twin brother, Shawn, also a 2005 Clay graduate and a 2009 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, is enrolled at the University of Cincinnati School of Music. He will be performing as a semi-finalist in Opera Idol in July, and will study vocal performance in Italy.
