Terra Community College and its collaborating partners will host an open house for a new – and quite unique – lab April 27.
The Developmental and Assistive Technologies for Everyone (DATE) Lab and Classroom will be officially unveiled to the campus community and the public April 27 from 2 to 7 p.m. The lab is located in the General Technologies Building (Building B), room 201.
“This lab will help our students succeed by giving them access to computer equipment and software designed to assist in areas of disability,” said Dr. Michael Kapper, assistant professor and one of the lab’s developers. “While we have initially focused on students in our Developmental Education program, the lab will be available to all Terra students and to members of the community, so everyone can benefit from these technologies.”

The Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) program, the Pathways 2 Employment program and the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission collaborated in the project.
A $155,285 grant for the lab was jointly funded by the Ohio Board of Regents and the Rehabilitation Services Commission.
The learning lab and the classroom will be used to enhance access to education for students with disabilities by providing a variety of assistive technology software and equipment and to provide instructional space for a developmental learning community comprised of students with disabilities and students who place into developmental education classes.
The lab will also be open to the collaborating partners and the public when they are not being used by Terra students.
