Scholarship awardees Owens Community College Foundation has awarded more than $165,300 in scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year to students for their outstanding achievements.
The Owens Foundation, incorporated in April 2002, has more than $2.4 million in assets. The board of directors currently is comprised of 29 community leaders from Lucas, Wood and Hancock counties.
Scholarship recipients include:
Ford Scholarship: Amy Ashley, of Oak Harbor, received a $750 scholarship, designated for women and minorities. Preference is given to Ford employees and their spouses and children.
Jones-Hamilton Co. Scholarship: Kyle Simok, of Northwood, received a $900, scholarship.
Mary’s Scholarship: Sarah Gerkensmeyer, of Genoa, and Nicole VanNess, of Woodville, each received a $1,000 scholarship.
Owens Community College Foundation Scholarship: Corey Hodgson, of Curtice, received a $500 scholarship. Owens Community College Foundation Honors Scholarship: Breanna Beck and Nicole Buchanan, of Genoa, each received a $500 scholarship.
Post-Secondary Option Book Scholarship: Eric Magrum, of Luckey and Brittany Whitmore, of Northwood each received $400 scholarships.
President Daniel H. Brown Scholarship: Anne Malin, of Northwood, and Deborah Thomasson, of Walbridge, each received an $800 scholarship. Recipients must be enrolled in at least six credit hours each semester and have achieved a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Preference is given to health science students.
The Scott Simpson Memorial Scholarship: Kevin Krasa, of Oregon, received an $800 scholarship.
Toledo Community Foundation –Amber Brossia and Renee Hires, of Northwood, each received $500 scholarships.
Toledo Mobile Radio Association Scholarship: Janet Dzienny, of Millbury, received a $500 scholarship.
Matthew D. Winckowski Memorial Scholarship: Jenna Spetz, of Oregon, received a $500 scholarship.
Bluffton scholar Lauren Canaday, a Bluffton University junior from Northwood, is a member of the C. Henry Smith Scholars program at Bluffton this year. She is also a resident advisor in Ramseyer Hall.
C. Henry Smith Scholars are selected each spring from among the next year's juniors and seniors who have a GPA of 3.3 or above. Only 15 students are chosen each year. Members may be used in course planning, teaching and/or special tutoring. A resident advisor is responsible for a floor of residents and reports directly to a hall director.
Homes honored Eric Holmes, of Oregon and a student at The University of Toledo received the Othmer Award on Dec. 8.
The Othmer Award is given each year to the sophomore with the highest grade point average. It includes a certificate from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a copy of the Perry’s Manual.
Eric is majoring in chemical engineering and minoring in entrepreneurship, family and small business. He is a 2009 Clay High graduate.
Inducted Andrew Hartke and Lauren Kubasek, of Oregon, were among Owens Community College students recognized for their academic excellence and leadership within the community, earning membership into the Gamma Zeta Chapter of the Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society.
Selection criterion for acceptance into the honor society is based upon achievement of a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average for two consecutive full-time semesters or three-four part-time semesters. In addition, individuals must have taken at least one developmental education course at Owens.
Also at Owens, a number of area students were inducted into Alpha Omega Pi Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
They include Albin Bauer III, Renee Hires, Megan Childers and Myron Draime, of Northwood; Andrew Hartke and Gabrielle Cutino, of Oregon; Joseph Mackey, of Curtice; Rebecca Sheehy, of Genoa; Lauren Murtaugh, of Graytown; Jordan Glass, of Oak Harbor; Alyssa LaVoy, and Terri Leary, of Pemberville; and Chad Born and Amanda Chernota, of Walbridge.
Selection requirements include meeting enrollment requirements, achieving a minimum 3.5 grade point average and exemplifying academic excellence, as determined by faculty.
