It was just after the Easter season when Sue Folck was discussing the concept of thankfulness with the 3- and 4-year-olds in her class at The Gathering Place Christian Childcare center in Oregon.
“We discussed the blessings we enjoy and how we should be thankful for them – things like our moms and dads, family, friends, the homes we live in, beds we sleep in, food we eat, etc.,” Folck said. “We also pointed out that many children don’t have a home, or bed, or food, or even mommies and daddies.”
Brandon Copsey, who is not quite 4 years old, listened especially intently, raising his hand several times to ask questions and to express his concern for the children who weren’t as lucky as he.
So the little guy came up with a big plan.
“Miss Sue – I’m going to bring in all of my pennies to help those kids get a house and bed,” Brandon said.
His empathy and concern led to the creation of “Brandon’s Mission House,” which sits in the corridor at The Gathering Place. The miniature house, fashioned from cardboard and wallpaper and decorated with two hearts serves as a collection site for donations – pennies and other change brought in by kids and adults alike.
The funds will be used to help local ministries that help homeless children, such as the Sparrow’s Nest or the Bethany House, Folck said.
“Our children have such giving hearts,” she said. “We are proud that they want to help others in their own community.
“It’s a great lesson for all of us.”
