In a huge upset victory, the Gibsonburg Middle School Sixth Grade Quiz Bowl team recently won the Wood County Quiz Bowl championship by defeating Bowling Green St. Aloysius, Otsego and previously undefeated Eastwood.

Every match saw the GMS sixth-graders winning two of the three grueling contests. In the first round, the Golden Bears began with an easy victory over Bowling Green St. Aloysius, 124-66. Gibsonburg started very strong by winning 56-18. St. Aloysius won the second round 40-36, but in the final match, the Bears roared back and won 32-8.

Otsego was the next opponent and it was really a nail-biter with the initial contest going to GMS 38-28 and the second set, 34-30. In the last round, the Knights put on a furious rally and almost caught the Bears, winning 36-28. With a 100-94 defeat over Otsego, GMS advanced to the championship match with Eastwood, which had soundly won over Gibsonburg in February.

The Bears started out strong, winning 38-28, however the Eagles showed that they belonged in the tournament and scored a huge victory, 50-32. But the never-say-die Gibsonburg sixth graders put on an amazing and emotional display of determination, answering question after question and winning 60-44. With the final score of Gibsonburg 130 and Eastwood 122, the Bears finished the year with a record of nine wins and two losses and put an end to Eastwood’s run of Quiz Bowl supremacy.

Coach Don Ralston credited Quiz Bowl team members Kelleigh Beatty, Rebecca Bixby, Nathan Clark, Amber Frankforther, Avery Gerwin, Chelsea Halm, Maria Moscioni, Aaron Shiple, and Soren Sondergeld for their successful season.

The Gibsonburg Middle School Sixth Grade Quiz Bowl team, coached by Don Ralston, emerged victorious in the Wood County Quiz Bowl Championship.
