Dislocated workers in Northwest Ohio seeking opportunities to learn new job skills can find help through the Constructing Futures program administered by the Northwest Ohio Construction Education Center (NOCEC).

The program is open to any adult and/or dislocated worker, especially women and minorities. It requires participation in one of four training sessions which will be held five hours per day for 12 weeks. Some of the trainings will be in Toledo while others will be at other locations in the area.

The training consists of OSHA and Safety training, employer expectations, ABLE/GED preparation, environmental 101, CPR/First Aid, work ethic, basic education skills, communication, leadership, Labor 101, math for the trades, critical thinking skills, life skills, pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship, computer fundamentals, problem-solving, financial literacy, job-shadowing, job-readiness skills, and mentoring/tutoring.

NOCEC will work with Penta Career Center, Four-County Career Center, Alliance of Construction Professionals, Area 9 Lucas County Workforce Investment Board, and WSOS Community Action Commission to conduct the trainings and provide other services.

Several unions, including Insulators Local 45, Bricklayers/Tile Setters Local 3, Cement Masons Local 886, Glaziers Local 948, Painters Local 7, Roofers Local 134 and Plasterers Local 886, will provide the apprenticeships.

Once participants complete the pre-apprenticeship program, they can apply to registered apprenticeship programs. If no programs are accepting new apprentices, WSOS staff will assist in job placement activities until there are openings in the registered apprenticeship programs.
