Entries are now being accepted in the Wood County Committee on Aging’s 2012 Poetry and Short Story
Contest.
The contest, themed “Reflections from Within,” is open to Wood County residents age 50 and older. Entries must be entirely the author’s original work and may never have been previously published, online or offline. Entries must be in English, double-spaced in a 12-point Times New Roman font. Two entries per person will be accepted.

Submissions must include entrants’ name, address, phone number, email address and date of submission. The deadline to enter is March 1.

Entries will be reviewed by BGSU students, Dave Miller from the Sentinel-Tribune and WCCOA participants. The first-place winner will receive a $50 gift card. The second-place prize is a $25 gift card. All winners will be featured on WCCOA’s blog woodcountycommitteeonaging.blogspot.com.

All poems and short stories will be read beginning at 4 p.m. March 21 at WCCOA’s annual banquet. For more information, call 1-800-367-4935.


ElderCollege winter festival
ElderCollege at Terra State Community College has announced its fall schedule. This organization offers lifelong learning for those 50 years of age and beyond through outings, lecture series and classes.

The schedule includes:
Educational outings
• Winter Golf – Feb. 15 through Feb. 29. Cost: $635.

• Shakespeare at Stratford, Ontario – May 11 and 12. Cost TBA.

• The Canadian Island Trip, Island of Coudres – Sept. 4 through 10. Cost: $880, double occupancy.


Day classes
• Book Review – 10 a.m. to noon, Jan. 20, Feb. 17 and March 16. Cost: $5 members/$10 non-members

• Poems of Spirituality – 9 to 11 a.m. Feb. 10. Cost: $5 members/$10 non-members

• Basic Digital Camera Class – 1 to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 13. Cost: $15 members/$20 non-members

• Creative Writing – 1 to 3 p.m., Fridays from Jan. 27 through March 2. Cost: $50 members/$55 non-members

• History of the Bible in English, Part II – 10 a.m. to noon, Wednesdays from Jan. 25 through Feb. 29. Cost: $40 members/$45 non-members

• Germany from its Unification to Hitler’s Empire – 1 to 3 p.m., Tuesdays from Jan. 24 through Feb. 28. Cost: $35 members/$40 non-members

• Musicals – 10 a.m. to noon, Fridays from Jan. 27 through March 2. Cost: $35 members/$40 non-members

• Painting with Watercolor – 10 a.m. to noon, Fridays from Jan. 27 through March 2. Cost: $50 members/$60 non-members

• Popcorn and a Movie – 12:30 to 3 p.m., Wednesdays from Jan. 25 through Feb. 29. Cost: $40 members/$45 non-members

• Games of the Past – 10 a.m. to noon, Mondays from Jan. 30 through Feb. 27. Cost: $10 members/$15 non-members

• Intro to Story Writing and Performance – 10 a.m. to noon, Fridays from Jan. 27 through March 2. Cost: $50 members/$55 non-members

• Learn to Play the Wii – 1 to 2:30 p.m., Mondays from Jan. 30 through Feb. 27. Cost: $10 members/$15 non-members

• Professional Fireworks – 1 to 3 p.m. March 5. Cost: $15 members/$20 non-members

• Retirement Planning Workshop – Session 1: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Feb. 29, March 7 and 14; and Session 2: 8:30 a.m. to noon, March 10 and 17. Cost: $50

Chili Cook-Off
The James “Wes” Hancock Senior Center is looking for the area’s best chili makers for its 2012 Chili Cook-Off, which will be held Feb. 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. at St. Michael’s Centre, 4001 Navarre Ave., Oregon.

There is no entry fee. Prizes will be awarded for Judges’ Choice, People’s Choice and Best Chili Name.

Lunch & Learn
Longtime Realtor and entrepreneur Darcey McKinely, of Key Realty will be the speaker at a Lunch & Learn program Jan. 24 at noon at Otterbein Portage Valley in Pemberville.

McKinely will share her insights on the real estate market in her presentation, themed, “Right Realtor, Right Price, Right Frame of Mind.”
