Ottawa Co. Seniors plan Chili & Soup Cook-Off
The Ottawa County Senior Activities Committee will hold the “3rd Annual Chili & Soup Cook-Off” Saturday, Oct. 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Riverview Healthcare Campus, 8180 W. SR 163, Oak Harbor.

A $3 admission includes chili and soup sampling and six voting tickets, as well as sloppy joes, treats and beverages. Guests are encouraged to sign up to attend by calling Senior Resources at 877-898-6459 or any of the senior centers. Walk-ins are welcome.

According to Juanita Mills-Persely, chairperson of Events & Fundraising for the Senior Activities Committee, cook-off entrants must be Ottawa County residents 55 years of age or older. There is no entrance fee but pre-registration is required by Sept. 23.

Entrants must bring a 5¬¬¬-7 quart crock-pot of chili or soup to judging tables by 3:45 p.m. for judging by “People’s Choice.” The winners of the overall competition will receive special awards and prizes. Those eligible to compete may enter a chili and/or a soup and may register by calling Ottawa County Senior Resources at 419-877-898-6459, their local senior center or Juanita at 419-341-1080.

The event will also include a “Face-Off of the Senior Centers” in which this year’s winners at the six senior centers will compete for traveling trophies, bragging rights and $50 for the winning center. June Kwiatkowski of the Port Clinton Seniors will be defending her two-year “best chili’ winning streak.

To round off the event, there will be a 50-50 raffle, music by DJ “Songbusters” and a special performance by the Buckeye Squares Square Dance Club.


“Medication and You”
“Medication and You, What You Don’t Know Can Kill You,” will be the topic of a seminar presented by Compass Care Management, LLC Sept. 22 from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. (potluck luncheon) at the Eastern Community YMCA, 2960 Pickle Rd., Oregon and again Sept. 28 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Oregon Branch Library, 3340 Dustin Rd.

The presentations are free and open to the public. Register for either session by calling 419-469-8909.


Pen to Palette program
The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library and the Toledo Museum of Art will present a “Pen to Palette Book/Art” program for seniors Oct. 7.

The program is designed to integrate library books with the museum collection by examining objects, studying period art and exploring cultures featured in the story.

Participants will meet at the Oregon Branch Library, 3340 Dustin Rd., at 11:15 a.m. and then will carpool to the Toledo Museum of Art at 11:30 a.m. (Parking $5 per car). At noon, attendees may have lunch in the museum café (at their own cost), while discussing the current title, “Girl With a Pearl Earring,” by Tracy Chevalier. At 1:30 p.m., there will be a docent tour that relates to the story and discussion.

Excursion planned
The East Toledo Senior Activities Center, with the help of Diamond Tours, will host a bus trip to Savannah, Ga., Jekyll Island and Beaufort, S.C.

The excursion will depart May 20, 2012 and return May 26. The cost is $600 per person, based on double occupancy. The cost includes motorcoach transportation, six nights lodging, including four consecutive nights in the Savannah area, 10 meals, and a tour of Jekyll and St. Simon’s Island to see how America’s early millionaires lived and played. There will also be a tour of Beaufort, S.C., “Queen of the Caroline Sea Islands,” plus a visit to Parris Island.

A deposit of $75 per person is required by Jan. 14. No payments will be taken before Jan. 1. The balance will be due by March 14.

Nominate a caregiver
The Ohio Department of Aging has issued a call for nominations for its annual Elder Caregiver Awards, which recognize outstanding individuals who have taken on the responsibilities of caring for a friend, loved one or neighbor, while also balancing other work and family responsibilities.

To be eligible for the award, either the caregiver or care recipient must be age 60 or older. One also must be a current resident of Ohio, and the caregiving for which the individual is nominated must not be job-related. The nominated individual, or a representative if he or she is unable, must consent to the nomination.

Individuals and organizations interested in nominating a neighbor, colleague, family member or friend may submit a nomination online or download a nomination form at www.aging.ohio.gov/news/nominations/. The department will accept nominations through Sept. 30.

Nominations will be evaluated on the impact on the caregiver and his or her family, unique or innovative approaches to caregiving, sources and types of care assistance used, special circumstances or barriers, impact on the care recipient, the severity of the recipient’s condition and the difficulty of care provided. Those chosen will receive the award in the spring.


Caregiving web conference set
The non-profit National Private Duty Association (NPDA), along with the Ohio Chapter of the organization, will host a consumer education web conference on “Addressing Legal Issues that Impact Seniors” Sept. 22 at 8 p.m.

The live and interactive program will provide advice on elder law matters, including pinpointing when you need to address legal issues, what the implications are and how to ensure you and your family are protected.

Presenter for the event, which is free to participants, is Joseph T. Monahan, M.S.W., A.C.S.W., J.D. Monahan, the legal counsel for the NPDA, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work from the University of Illinois in Champaign and his law degree from DePaul University College of Law.
