Gov. John R. Kasich has proclaimed May 2011 as Older Americans Month in Ohio. The Ohio Department of Aging joined the governor in supporting and promoting local celebrations all over the state.
The theme for 2011 is “Older Ohioans - Connecting Communities.”
“Our communities need their elders, and our elders need their communities,” Gov. Kasich said. “We are nothing without the shared histories, diverse experiences and wealth of knowledge of the generations before us. Their willingness to realize their dreams, speak their minds and work toward a better Ohio has provided opportunities for our children and grandchildren.”
“We are all inter-dependent,” added Bonnie Kantor-Burman, director of the Department of Aging. “Our elders are enjoying increased vitality and standard of living, and are more active in community life than ever before. But, also, they are choosing to remain in their communities longer, creating economic opportunities as home- and community-based care options expand.”
The Department of Aging is holding an Older Americans Month photo project on its Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/OhioDepartmentOfAging. Ohioans of all ages are encouraged to upload images they believe demonstrate how older Ohioans are connecting their communities.
