• Choose to take charge of your life. Don’t let your loved one’s illness or disability always take center stage. • Remember that you deserve quality time just for yourself. • Watch out for signs of depression and don’t delay in getting professional help if and when you need it. • Educate yourself about your loved one’s condition. • When people offer to help, accept the offer and suggest specific things they can do to help. • Trust your instincts. Most of the time you will be right. • There’s a difference between caring and doing. Be open to technologies that can help promote your loved one’s independence. • Grieve for your losses, then allow yourself to dream new dreams. • Stand up for your rights as a caregiver and citizen. • Seek support from other caregivers. There is strength in knowing you are not alone. From The National Family Caregiver Association
