Paul Zalar of Oregon, has received an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.
A 2009 graduate of Clay High School, he attended and played baseball at Shawnee State University for one year. In 2010, he attended the University of Toledo, where he studied Electrical Engineering and participated in Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) at Bowling Green State University.

Each candidate to the academy must receive a nomination from a member of Congress in order to be considered for appointment. Zalar received a principle nomination from Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-OH of the 9th Congressional District, and an additional nomination from AFROTC Dep 620, Bowling Green State University.
The son of Michael and Donna Zalar of Oregon, he began basic training in Colorado Springs June 23 and will begin classes in August.
Nursing graduates More than 140 Owens Community College students were recently bestowed honorary pins by the School of Nursing, signifying their completion of the registered nursing program.

Published Eastwood Middle School student Kylie Martin-Crosby’s poem, “Cannot Wait Until Summer,” is being published in a book called “A Celebration of Poets.”
Kylie was a seventh-grader during the 2010-2011 school year. She submitted the poem herself and was selected from among several thousand entries to be published.
Honors Band Eastwood High School Band senior Erin Dennis (clarinet) and junior Emily Elston (flute) were selected and participated in the Ohio Northern University Honors Band May 7-8. The guest conductor was Emmy-winning television and film composer Julie Giroux.
In addition, several students were recognized at the annual band Awards Banquet May 24. Awardees included:

Academic All-Ohio Two Terra Community College students were honored by the Ohio Association of Community Colleges at a luncheon in the Ohio Statehouse Atrium in Columbus April 29.
Erica Brasic, of Gibsonburg, and Jason Fatzinger, of Tiffin, were named to the Academic All-Ohio Third Team. Brasic is from Gibsonburg while Fatzinger is from Tiffin.
Brasic is pursuing an Associate of Science degree at Terra and plans to transfer to the University of Toledo and enroll in the doctorate of occupational therapy program.
Each received a letter of congratulations from the Ohio Senate, a certificate, a medallion and $250.
Masons Scholarship The 32° Masons in Toledo presented 32° Scottish Rite Scholarships to Rachel Duncan, of Northwood and R. Spencer Genson III, of Toledo.
Both Duncan and Genson will attend Bluffton University. The scholarships are given to the children of 32° Masonic families, to young people who have been active in Masonic-related organizations such as DeMolay, Rainbow and Job’s Daughters, and to graduates of the Children’s Dyslexia Center.
Grant awarded Mercy College BSN student Bobbi Schelkun, of Oregon, was one of only five students in Ohio recognized with $500 State Farm Insurance Legacy Grants from Ohio Campus Compact, a nonprofit membership organization of 47 Ohio colleges and universities with strong community service, service-learning, and/or civic engagement programs on their campuses.
The Charles J. Ping Student Service Awards recognize and honor undergraduate college students for their leadership, and the State Farm Legacy Grant enables those outstanding college service leaders to financially support their community partners.
Schelkun received the award on May 20 at Mercy College and presented the legacy grant to Dan Gosbeth, Service Coordinator for Madonna Homes, a 171-unit apartment building catering to people who are elderly or who have disabilities. At Shelkun's request, the grant will be used to assist residents with transportation (bus tokens) for appointments, to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for meal programs and supplies for the lending closet, to hold a pizza party for the knitting group and to provide emergency assistance with laundry needs.
