The Maritime Academy of Toledo has planned a series of open houses aimed at giving students and adults in need of job retraining an opportunity to see what the school and the center have to offer. The weeklong open house events are set for June 20 to 24 and Aug. 1 to 5
“Educational needs are changing, and The Maritime Academy of Toledo is evolving to meet the challenges of those changes,” said Superintendent Renee Marazon. “We have added The Maritime Training and Education Center as part of our facility in Downtown Toledo. We have the capability to train adults looking for jobs in the maritime industry or recertify those already employed in the industry.
“Our facility allows us to house those who come to Toledo for training,” she said. “We are in the process of evolving into a full-service, full-scale educational center for the entire maritime industry. While our primary focus remains a quality education for students in grades five to 12, we are developing programs aimed at adults who are in need of job retraining.”
The center’s Cruise Ship Administration, Accounting, and Purser Training (CSAAPT) classes are sponsored by The Maritime Academy of Toledo Foundation, in conjunction with the Maritime Holding Group in Miami, Fla., employment consultants to the cruise ship industry. Over the next year, school officials project they could hold enough classes to help find at least 140 people jobs in the cruise line industry.
The Maritime Academy of Toledo and The Maritime Training and Education Center are also working on the Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping (STCW) Basic Safety Training Course for maritime professionals. This course is required for all mariners. The U.S. Coast Guard approved course includes personal survival, personal and social responsibility, basic first aid, and basic firefighting.
“Anyone who wants to work in the industry must complete this course. We have had interest from people outside the Toledo area for this course. We are the only center in the nation that is offering the junior officer courses for the cruise line industry, and the necessary basic safety training courses, under one roof,” said Ms. Marazon.
