The Land Lab Learners of Carroll School recently received a visit from Carol Benner, of the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District.
These students, who range from first to fifth grade, volunteer to be a part of the “class,” which meets during recess. The group, led by Heather Dewitz, meets weekly to work out in the land lab and to participate in educational activities.

Land Lab Learners and Carol Benner gather around the “enviroscape” model – a visual learning tool to show students both point and non- point pollution and ways to correct it. |
Recently, the students learned about watersheds, particularly the Portage and Toussaint watersheds that drain into Lake Erie. Using an “enviroscape/watershed” model, Benner showed the students how poor environmental management of factories, private landowners, farmers, golf courses and construction sites can pollute Lake Erie.
Benner also discussed point and non-point source pollution, invasive species, erosion and how the Soil and Water Conservation District works with farmers and urban landowners to take care of their land through better management.
