Registration set for Penta’s STEM Summer Camp
Students currently enrolled in seventh through ninth grades who reside within one of the 16 school districts served by Penta Career Center are invited to register for the 2011 STEM Summer Camp.

The camp will be held June 13 to 17 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Penta campus, 9301 Buck Rd., Perrysburg. Cost for the camp is $25. Students interested in exploring careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are encouraged to register.

Students will participate in a variety of hands-on activities in the areas of: Construction Remodeling, Medical Technology, Green Energy Management, Medical Technology and Geospatial Information Systems (GIS). Participants will experience a different program area each day. All activities are designed to increase students’ understanding of how science, technology, engineering and math skills are used in a variety of career fields.

The deadline for registering for STEM Summer Camp is April 15.

The camp is offered to students in Penta’ s member school districts which include Eastwood, Genoa, Lake, Northwood, Oak Harbor and Woodmore, among others.
 

Story contest
Serenity Farm, Inc., in Luckey, invites third- through fifth-graders to create a story about “Sky,” the farm’s paint pony.

Sky, a 13-year-old mare, has carried children in the farm’s therapy program, where they come to improve speech, walking and riding skills. She has blue eyes and stands 12.3 hands tall.

The winner will enjoy a spot in the farm’s summer program and a photo opportunity with Sky at the farm. The winner will be announced April 29 at 6 p.m.

Entries must be no more than 300 words, written or typed. Submissions must include the writer’s name, address and phone number. One entry per student will be accepted. The deadline is April 1.

Woodmore sets registration
Woodmore Schools will hold registration and screening for kindergarten students for the 2011-12 school year April 18, 19 and 20 at Woodmore Elementary School, 708 W. Main St., Woodville.

To be eligible to enter kindergarten in the fall, a child must be 5 years of age on or before Aug. 1, 2011.

Parents are asked to call the school office April 4 through 15 to make an appointment. Appointment times are 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Registration and screening will be done by appointment only, and the process will take between 60 and 90 minutes.

Lake kindergarten signups
Lake Schools will conduct kindergarten screenings May 5 and 6. Children who will be 5 years old on or before Aug. 1 are eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall.

Screenings will provide parents with information about the child’s speech development, large and small motor skills, language skills and readiness for kindergarten. Each child will also receive a vision and hearing test. Parents/guardians must be present with their children during the screening process, which will take about 90 minutes.

Screening sessions will be offered May 5 at 10 a.m. and 12:30, 2:45 and 5 p.m.; and May 6 at 8 and 10 a.m. and 12:30 or 2 p.m.

A confirmation letter will be sent advising the date and time for the child’s session. Those without Internet access may call 419-661-6520 to request a registration form.

The child’s birth certificate, Social Security card, proof of residency (gas or electric bill) and custody papers, if applicable, must be brought to the screening appointment.


B-C-S kindergarten signups
Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools have announced the schedule for kindergarten screenings for the 2011-12 school year.

Screenings will be held April 19 and 20 at R.C. Waters Elementary School (419-898-6219); May 9 at Carroll Elementary (419-898-6215); and May 10 at Graytown Elementary (419-862-2082).

Parents/guardians are asked to call the appropriate school office as soon as possible to schedule a screening appointment.

Spring kindergarten screening will assess such areas as vision, hearing, speech, language, and motor development. Children should dress in comfortable clothes, including athletic shoes if possible, since some of the testing requires movement.

The child’s birth certificate, proof of residency, immunization records, Social Security number, and custody papers, if applicable, should be brought to the screening.


Eastwood reunion planned
Members of Eastwood High School class of 1986 are planning a 25th class reunion July 30. 

The celebration will begin at 1 p.m. with a tour of Eastwood High School and grounds. A hospitality tent with refreshments and memorabilia will be set up adjacent to the Luckey Road parking lot.

The Riverview Banquet Centre in Pemberville will be the setting for the evening festivities, which will begin at 6 p.m. The tropical-themed evening will include music, dinner, dancing, drinks and a trip down “Memory Lane.”

Advance tickets are required for both activities and are available by visiting the class website – http://Eastwood1986.classquest.com. A discount will be offered for early registration.

Both activities are open to class members, former classmates as well as Eastwood staff members. Class members are encouraged to add updates to the site and to answer survey questions.

Small Business Basics
The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Terra Community College is offering free, two-hour seminars, “Small Business Basics,” designed to answer questions about starting, buying or expanding a small business.

Participants will learn the basics of name registration, licensing, taxes, zoning, business entities, employees, insurance, financing and business planning.

Purple & Gold Celebration
Morrison R. Waite High School is celebrating its 97th year as an educational institution in East Toledo this year.

As part of this celebration, four Waite graduates will be honored and inducted as Distinguished Waite Alumni at the 47th Annual Purple and Gold Dinner Celebration, planned for April 2 at St. Michael Centre, 4001 Navarre Ave., Oregon.

A social hour and silent auction will begin the evening’s festivities at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. The four inductees will be honored at 8 p.m. and fellowship will follow from 9 to 11 p.m. A $40 per person reservation is requested for the evening.

The 2011 inductees include Fred A. Bollin, class of 1957, Business and Community Service; Gregory W. Bonnell, class of 1967, Education and Community Service; Edward R. Platzer, class of 1967, Education and Community Service; Thomas L. Schuster, class of 1959, Business and Community Service; Robert E. Wagner, class of 1965, Business and Community Service.

The Distinguished Alumni will also be presented to the Waite student body at a program April 1 at 9:30 a.m. at the school.

Spring Fling fundraiser
The St. Boniface Support Group will host a Spring Fling fundraising Dinner and Dance May 14 from 6:30 p.m. to midnight at the Community Markets VFW Hall, 251 W. Main St., Oak Harbor.

The dinner will include a pasta buffet, salad, rolls and soft drinks. The fundraiser will also include a silent auction and raffle and entertainment by a local band.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. for those who are attending the dinner. Admission begins at 7:30 p.m. for the dance.

Dinner/dance tickets are $20 per person and $30 per couple in advance and $25 per person and $40 in at the door (limited supply available at the door). Tickets for the dance only are $15 at the door. Beer tickets will also be available at the door while supplies last.

Friday-night takeout 
Owens’ Community Terrace View Café has announced its first-ever Friday-evening takeout menu selections, available April 1-29.

The student-run Terrace View Café is open to the public during the academic year. Owens’ restaurant, which is coordinated by the Department of Food, Nutrition and Hospitality, is located in College Hall Room 148. Diners will be able to pick up their meals from 6 to 7 p.m. in café.

The menu selections were planned by culinary arts students in the American Regional Cuisine class led by Owens Chef Bill Powell.

Stritch, Kateri receive grant 
The Board of Trustees of the Toledo Community Foundation has awarded a $10,000 grant to Cardinal Stritch High School and Kateri Catholic Academy to support the costs of student enrollment and tuition.

The funds will be used to help bolster the financial aid fund, which supports the costs of student enrollment and tuition.

Cardinal Stritch and Kateri Catholic Academy awarded nearly $500,000 in needs-based financial aid during the 2010-2011 school year.

“We are very grateful to the Toledo Community Foundation and to Dick and Fran Anderson for their continued support,” said Fr. Eric Schild, president of Cardinal Stritch High School and Kateri Catholic Academy. “This commitment allows us to open the door of world-class, Catholic education to many people who would normally not be able to afford it. The Anderson family has been wonderful stewards of generosity and service to our community, which is something we also foster here at Cardinal Stritch High School and Kateri Catholic Academy.”

Author to speak
As part of Teacher Appreciation activities at Barnes and Noble Book Stores, Lucas County Retired Teachers Association will co-host a book signing with Casey Reason, PhD., author of “Leading a Learning Organization: The Science of Working with Others” April 11 at 7 p.m. at Barnes and Noble, 4940 Monroe St., Toledo.

Phi Delta Kappa will co-host this event. Dr. Reason, a former resident and principal at Waite High School, will speak briefly about his book, answer questions and then sign copies.


Registration Rocks
Area high school seniors are invited to learn about educational opportunities available at Owens Community College at Registration Rocks, a fun, music-themed event planned for March and April.

High school seniors can sign up for any day of Registration Rocks, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 29 and April 6, 8, 13, 19, 20 and 27.

Owens is located on Oregon Road in Perrysburg Township. Attendees are required to RSVP prior to the event by calling 1-800-GO-OWENS, ext. 7253.

Throughout each day, students will be able to meet with an advisor, tour campus, complete the new student orientation and pick up important information about financial aid, clubs and student activities, local housing and academic program offerings. In addition, a separate program on learning to support your children in college will be offered to parents who attend Registration Rocks.

Seniors will have the opportunity to win various raffle prizes during each day. Additionally, attendees will be provided with a free lunch during their visit.

Hair-raising fundraiser
Clay High School cosmetology students Heather Curry and Erin Baddenhope, interns at Today’s Salon in Oregon will present a “What Inspires You?” Hair Show April 1 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Clay auditorium, 5665 Seaman Rd., Oregon.

Admission to the show, which will feature demonstrations of fun and unique hairstyles, is $3 Proceeds will benefit Jacquelin Segur, a former employee at The Future Wave salon in Oregon, who has been diagnosed with cancer. Segur also attended Clay’s cosmetology students.

Lake anniversary
Former teachers and staff members from Lake Elementary School are invited to share some “fish tales” and take memories of the school at a 50th anniversary celebration April 19.
