RC Waters fourth-graders learn about ash borers

“Wow…this bug is shiny!” is just one of the comments heard from Becky Renner’s fourth-graders at RC Waters Elementary School in Oak Harbor as they passed around an Emerald Ash Borer when Carol Benner, from the Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District, recently paid a visit to the students.

To help the students understand how the Emerald Ash Borer can swiftly infect an area, one student was given five bugs to spread to the other ash trees (represented by students) without moving. Before they knew, it every ash tree (student) in the room was infected by the “bug.”

For more information about Emerald Ash Borer infestation, call 1-888-644-6322 or visit www.ohioagriculture.gov/eab.
