David Harms, a social studies instructor at Penta Career Center in Perrysburg, and an adjunct professor at LourdesCollege in Sylvania, has been recognized as an Emerging Leader by PDK International, a global association of education professionals. Harms lives in Walbridge.

The PDK Emerging Leader program recognizes top educators under age 40 from around the world for their leadership. A committee comprised of PDK’s past Emerging Leaders selected the 20 honorees from a competitive field of applicants, based on their outstanding professional accomplishments.

In addition to being honored at the 2011 PDK International Conference on Innovations in Teaching and Learning, honorees also have the opportunity to be published by PDK, apply for grants and participate in PDK initiatives.

“Honoring these young leaders is one of PDK’s most important initiatives,” said William J. Bushaw, PDK International’s executive director. “We know the future of education is in good hands with leaders like these making a difference in the lives of our students.”

Harms has recently returned from a Fulbright Group Projects Abroad month-long tour in Jordan and has studied abroad in many countries, including Ghana, Benin, Togo, France, Belgium, Mexico, China and Germany. He received Penta’s 2009 Teacher of the Year award and is a top five finalist for the 2010 Ohio Teacher of the Year.

He is an adjunct instructor at both Lourdes College and WGTE Public Media, teaching computer courses and teacher technology training seminars. Harms is a frequent presenter at national, state and local conferences and shares experiences in educational technology and teaching strategies.

“I am focusing on completing my doctorate and exploring, designing, and teaching online classes at the secondary and post-secondary level,” he said.

Harms is a member of the PDK Toledo chapter and the Walden University Cyberspace chapter. He is also affiliated with High Schools That Work and is a member of the Ohio Education Association, Kappa Delta Pi, National Council for the Social Studies and Ohio Council for the Social Studies.
