their time to help Wynn Elementary School students through the WynnReads program.

The volunteer-based reading tutor program runs at the Oregon elementary school from Oct. 15 through May 15. The tutors give their time to help students at every grade level with reading, fluency, comprehension and other literacy skills to help them become successful and fluent readers.

Many of the students receive one-on-one time with their tutors on a weekly basis. Fourth- and fifth-grade students have group sessions helping them with science, social studies, spelling/vocabulary and chapter book reading.

All tutors are fingerprinted and trained at a Fall Kick off Training Breakfast in October. Each tutor is asked to donate a half-hour to an hour per week. This year, 28 tutors served over 200 hours of service.

At the celebration luncheon, the volunteer tutors were presented with a certificate of appreciation, a potted flower and a $10 gift card to a local restaurant. The Wynn Elementary staff joined the tutors for a soup and salad luncheon to celebrate the successful year.

Gary Thompson and Beverly Filipiak were given special gift cards to B.J.’s Hide-A-Way in Oregon for donating over 16 hours of service. Local restaurants that donated gift cards included Buffalo Wild Wings, Luckie’s, Salad Galley, Cinco de Mayo, Golden Jade, Burnsey’s, Bayshore Supper Club, Oregon Inn, Dos Hermanos, and Eagle’s Nest. The potted flowers were the creations of Bench’s Flower farm. Soups were from Salad Galley.

“We are always looking for community volunteers to help our students strive to be better readers,” Bohland said.
