Mrs. Mahaney Scholarship
Cortni Collins, of Walbridge, has been awarded Lake Schools’ 2010 Mrs. Mahaney Scholarship in the amount of $350.

The scholarship is presented in memory of Paulette Mahaney, who taught for many years at Lake Local Schools. It was open to any of Mrs. Mahaney’s former students who are graduating from Lake Local Schools this year and will go on to attend college. The recipient is chosen based on GPA, extracurricular activities, leadership positions held and a short essay.

Collins plans to continue her education at Ohio State University majoring in Biology/Pre-medicine.


Nursing pins awarded
Rachel Auls, of Gibsonburg and Sabrina Higeman, of Woodville, were among members of the third class of graduates from Terra Community College’s Associate Degree Nursing program who received their nursing pins during a ceremony May 8.

Susan Kajfasz, MSN, RN, CNS, NE-BC, dean of Terra’s Associate Degree Nursing Program, presided over the event with Assistant Professor Sister Patricia Carter, MHHA, RN, serving as the keynote speaker. Graduates chose the person to pin them. Most were pinned by husbands, parents, siblings or children.


T-shirt contest winners
Suburban-area students were among the winners in the second annual Toledo Mud Hens “Design a T-Shirt Contest.” More than 30 schools from Ohio and Michigan participated in the contest.

Mud Hens staff narrowed down the artwork submitted by students to the top three high school and middle school/elementary designs. Artwork was posted at www.mudhens.com, and voted on by fans to determine a winner.

In the middle /elementary school category, third place went to Samantha Valez, who got a $50 gift card to the Swamp Shop and a $100 donation to her school, Walbridge Elementary, from the Mud Hens. Runner-up Katie Dills, from Notre Dame Junior Academy, received a $50 gift card to the Swamp Shop and a $250 donation for her school. Winner Griffin Preuss from Whiteford Elementary got a $100 Swamp Shop gift card. The Mud Hens will sell the T-shirt in the Swamp Shop throughout the season and will donate 20 percent of the proceeds to the school, located in Sylvania.

In the high school category, third place went to Ethan Ramsey from Start High School, who got a $50 Swamp Shop gift card and a $100 school donation. Runner-up Devon Gavorski, from Woodmore High School, got a $50 gift card and a $250 donation to the school. Winner Phillip Mosley from Woodward High School got a $100 gift card. Twenty percent of the proceeds from sales of the shirt, on sale throughout the seasons, will go to the school.


Honor society inductees
Owens Community College students and a faculty member were recently recognized for their academic excellence
and leadership within the community, earning membership into the Gamma Zeta Chapter of the Chi Alpha Epsilon National Honor Society.

Suburban-area inductees include Alisa Acors, of Millbury; Samantha Heninger, of Genoa; and Christine Miller of Walbridge.

Owens Associate Professor of English Lori Owens, of Bradner, was named an honorary inductee as a result of her longstanding commitment and support to developmental education at Owens.

Selection criterion for acceptance into the honor society is based upon students achieving a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average for two consecutive full-time semesters or three-four part-time semesters. In addition, individuals must have taken at least one developmental education course at Owens.

Owens scholarships
Three suburban-area high school seniors recently were honored by Owens Community College’s Board of Trustees for their outstanding achievements, receiving scholarships through the Trustees’ Academic Excellence Scholarship Program. Scholarship recipients and their intended course of study at Owens include:
• Amanda Vogel, of Perrysburg, an Eastwood High School graduate (pre-pharmacy);

• Kara McCloskey, of Oak Harbor, an Oak Harbor High School graduate (social work);

• Sammy Schwandner, of Elmore, a Woodmore High School graduate (criminal justice technology).


DEKALB award
Kayla Miller, of Genoa, was recently presented the Genoa High School’s highest agricultural honor, the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award, sponsored by the Monsanto Company.

She received the award for excellence in academics, leadership and agricultural work experience.


Rising star
Gene Snyder, of Elmore, was recognized as one of Defiance College’s Rising Stars in the digital forensic science major. The program provides special recognition for students who illustrate great potential within their program of study and/or give of their time, energy and talent to enrich the campus community.


Peace Officer graduates  
Steven Dudley, of Walbridge and James Murray, of Curtice, were among the 45 graduates recognized at the May 5 graduation of the Ohio Basic Peace Officer Training Academy at Owens Community College.

Following successful completion of the academy, graduates become eligible for certification as an Ohio peace officer. In addition, coursework earned by graduates will apply toward an associate degree in law enforcement at Owens.


FFA scholarships
During Woodmore’s FFA banquet held April 29, the FFA Alumni Association announced the recipients of the $3,000 in scholarships administered by their organization.

Recipients included:
• Adam Trolio, Woodmore FFA Alumni Scholarship ($500);
• Brock Avers, the Paul Rothert Memorial Scholarship ($1,000);
• Cameron Shirer, the Dan Juergens Memorial Scholarship ($500);
• Jacob Flagg, the Richard Heins Memorial Scholarship ($500);
• Elishia Stone, the Woodmore FFA Alumni Scholarship in memory of Beth Roberts ($500).
