Owens Community College students and a faculty member were recently honored for their academic excellence, earning membership in the Psi Beta National Honor Society.
The Psi Beta Honor Society was established in 1981 as a national honor society for psychology within community and junior colleges. Selection criteria for students receiving the honor is based upon achieving a class ranking in the top 35 percent or an overall 3.3 grade point average, earning a minimum “B” average in psychology and completing at least two semesters of psychology coursework. Additionally, recipients must demonstrate a genuine interest in psychology and exhibit high standards of personal integrity.
Inductees include Monica Gottfried, of Luckey; William Hooser, of Genoa; and Juanita Payne, of Walbridge; Janet Ackerman, Holly Clark and Wendy Erdmann, of Oregon; and Camella Cramer and Tyler Trease, of Toledo.
Julie Weyandt, of Oak Harbor, earned a master of arts degree in Clinical Pastoral Counseling from Ashland Theological Seminary. The seminary, a division of Ashland University, is the largest seminary in Ohio and the 12th largest seminary in the United States and Canada.
Buckeye Boys State
Northwood High School seniors Spencer Guerrero and Kyle Simon were chosen as delegates for Buckeye Boys State, which was held in June. They were sponsored by Christ Dunberger Legion Post in Oregon.
Matt Swaim and Paul Zalar represented Clay High School at Buckeye Boys State.
Buckeye Girls State
Heather Klatt and Britney Stribrny represented Clay High School at Buckeye Girls State. Klatt was delegated on the board of elections and city council and Stribrny was delegated on the state school board.
Rachel Pioch, of Northwood, has enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio Northern University for the 2008-09 school year. She will be a freshman majoring in biology.
The board of trustees of the Toledo Community Foundation recently awarded $18,850 in college scholarships from two Belmont Country Club Scholarship Funds. Individual scholarships ranged from $500 to $2,500.
Recipients included Ronald St. John, of Northwood (Owens Community College); Lindsey Faley (Owens Community College), Megan Konoff (Owens Community College); Rachel Konoff (Owens Community College) and Tricia Rodriguez (Heidelberg College), all of Toledo.
The foundation also awarded scholarships from the Toledo Board of Realtors Scholarship Fund. Awardees included James Baker (University of Toledo) and Joylette Daniels (Ursuline College), of Toledo; and Sarah English (Ohio State University), of Oregon.
