Black Swamp Educator’s Extravaganza
Educators, scout leaders and youth group leaders are invited to discover new ways to engage and motivate youth of all ages at the Annual Black Swamp Educators Extravaganza (BSEE) June 16-18.

Participants learn about the Toledo Botanical Gardens, composting, birding, Junior Master Gardener program, ag in the classroom, rocks and gems, pottery, the Marblehead Lighthouse with a display of soils gathered from Lake Erie’s coastline, lessons on butterflies and more.

Registration is $115 (or $50/day). The cost includes meals and workshop materials. The Registration deadline is May 31.

Nature Camp Experience
Black Swamp Bird Observatory in Oak Harbor will offer a weeklong nature camp for students in grades six through eight June 8 to 12.

The “Nature Camp Experience” includes activities such as habitat exploration, birdwatching, fishing, journaling,
swimming, scrapbooking, canoeing, and an overnight campout. The cost is $100. For reservations call 419 898-4070.

 
Getting mileage out of old sneakers
Owens Community College’s Environmental Club’s “Reuse-A-Shoe” collection netted more than 1,100 sneakers, previously destined to end up in the landfill.

The donated sneakers will soon find their way to the Nike Recycling Center in Wilsonville, Ore., where they will be ground up and eventually transformed into an array of new sport surfaces such as basketball courts, tennis courts, athletic fields, running tracks and playgrounds.

The sneaker collection drive is part of a collaborative effort with Nike and their “Reuse-A-Shoe” program, which has recycled over 22 million pairs of athletic shoes and created more than 250 sport surfaces around the globe.

Small Business Basics
The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Terra Community College is offering free, two-hour seminars, “Small Business Basics,” that will answer questions about starting, buying or expanding a small business.

This seminar will help entrepreneurs avoid costly mistakes and unnecessary steps. Participants will learn the basics of name registration, licensing, taxes, zoning, business entities, employees, insurance, financing and business planning.

The June schedule include:
June 3 – 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., Ottawa County Improvement Corporation (conference room), 8043 W. SR 163, Oak Harbor.

June 24 – 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Terra Community College (Building B, Room 101), 2830 Napoleon Rd., Fremont.

History Day Camp
The Oregon-Jerusalem Historical Society is sponsoring a “Living History Day Camp” June 16-19 at the Historic Brandville School in Oregon.

The two-hour sessions will be held at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily. Space is available for a maximum of 12 children in grades three to five in each session. The fee is $15 per day or $50 for four days.
