Gary Truman honored
On Aug. 5, the Ottawa County Commissioners recognized Ottawa County Veteran Gary Truman, VFW Post 7510, Genoa.

Truman served on active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps from August 1964 to May 1968 and the Marine Corps Reserve from 1977 to 1990.

He completed Marine Corps Recruit Training in San Diego, California. After training, he served at Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station, Havlock, North Carolina; Camp LeJeune, North Carolina and Camp Cortney, Okinawa where he was deployed to DaNang, Chu Li, Phu Bi, and Hue, Vietnam, with the 3rd Marine Division.

ODOT “Roadeo” results
The Ohio Department of Transportation recently held its “Roadeo” at the district headquarters in Bowling Green. The event, an ODOT tradition, brings snow plow and loader operators together for a friendly competition to demonstrate their skills in a challenging obstacle course.

Winners included:
Dump (Plow) Truck – Chuck Theis, Seneca County Garage; Jason Naus, Wood County Garage and Rich Knauss, Northwood Outpost.

Front End Loader –Chuck Theis, Seneca County Garage; Manny Carrillo, Wood County Garage; Jason Naus, Wood County Garage.

First- and second-place winners of the District Two Roadeo will move on to face the winners from 11 other ODOT districts at the ODOT Director’s Cup Roadeo, which will be held in Columbus Sept. 4.

Firefighter’s service spans more than half a century
When Dennis “Pinky” Traver became a volunteer firefighter and donned his first safety coat it was made of rubber.

“When it got hot you got out of it,” he recalled. The required training was also less stringent than it is today as firefighters only needed to know basic Red Cross first aid.

That was in 1960 and after Traver moved to Millbury from Genoa, he became a member of the village fire department that would later merge with the fire station in the Village of Walbridge to become the Lake Township Fire Department.
