Officers elected

The Toledo Area Alliance to End Homelessness (TAAEH) elected officers at its May meeting. New officers include Paula Lewis (Beach House), president; Elizabeth Tore (Family Promise of Greater Toledo), vice-president; Kyle Grefe (FOCUS), secretary; and Donna Perras (Harbor House), treasurer.

TAAEH is a network of more than 30 local, nonprofit, social service agencies representing homeless shelters, transitional and permanent housing, substance abuse services, physical and mental health providers, and many other supportive service agencies. The organization is Toledo’s strongest advocate for the homeless.

According to the Toledo/Lucas County HMIS (Homeless Management Information System), the HUD recognized data collection system in our community, 1,523 homeless individuals received services from 22 TAAEH agencies from January, 2008 through May 31, 2008.

The calendar of upcoming activities for the group begins with a mid-year count of homeless individuals. The census is taken to better reflect the needs of the homeless and the steps and funding needed to meet those needs. The census will be taken at the end of July.

Local women installed

Three local women were installed as national officers at the recent national convention of Sigma Alpha Sorority, held in Branson, Mo.

Sigma Alpha is a social and philanthropic organization that, through various fundraisers, contributes to local charities and is a major contributor to Heartspring in Wichita, Kan., an institution committed to improving the life of children with autism.

There are four Sigma Alpha chapters in Ottawa County. At the closing of the convention, three local members were installed as national officers, including Sherry Rollins, mistress of ceremonies; Donna Wollenslegel, recording secretary; and Sue Lohr, business manager.
