Celebrating the history, future of Toledo Harbor Lighthouse

Located about seven miles north of Maumee Bay State Park in Lake Erie, the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse marks the Great Lakes’ shallowest, warmest most biologically productive waters.

The lighthouse built of buff brick stands about 64’ high on a crib to guide boaters through the Toledo shipping channel. Architecturally unique, it features a three-story building, cellar, annex, and three-story tower. The steel roof is like the upside hull of a ship.

While it’s in good structural condition, it is in need of infrastructure, windows and other general overall restoration. The Toledo Lighthouse Preservation Society (THLPS) is working to restore this treasured lighthouse. The Department of Interior approved the THLPS’ application to own the lighthouse. The society is finalizing the plans for a boat dock and ramp that will be lowered when needed. The dock project is being funded by a grant from the Ohio Lake Erie Protection Fund and is scheduled for completion this spring. The society is also working on an hour-long documentary for public television that will feature the lighthouse and its waters.

THLPS has applied for a grant and is seeking additional funds for the preparation of plans and specifications for the lighthouse restoration project, which is estimated to cost $1 million. Plans call for a first-floor meeting area, museum and gift shop, second-floor research, education and outreach programs, and third-floor emergency preparedness and boater safety courses. The upper floors may have two bedrooms so folks can care for the lighthouse and schedule boats for the dock.

Festival!

In celebration of the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse, theToledo Lighthouse 103 rd-year Festival will be held July 7 and 8 at Maumee Bay State Park in Oregon. The festival will include featuring island music, boat tours around the lighthouse, a sand castle contest, lighthouse photo contest, nautical arts and crafts, food, silent auction, fireworks and more.
