Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elmore, will host a benefit pancake breakfast May 10, from 7 to 10 a.m. All proceeds from the event, including matching funds from Thrivent Financial, will be forwarded to Jillie and her family to help with expenses not covered by insurance.

Precious seconds matter

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10. In the time it took for you to read those numbers, five patients were given a needed blood transfusion.

In the United States, about four million people need blood each year; that’s nearly double the population of Chicago, and over half the population of New York City. Every two seconds someone uses a life-saving blood product.

For those who need transfusions, two seconds can mean a lifetime. The demand on the nation’s blood supply has increased dramatically in recent years. Continuing advances in modern medicine have resulted in new uses for blood products in cancer treatments. Surgical procedures such as organ transplants and joint replacements have become much more common, further increasing the demand for blood products.

The local Red Cross needs 300 units of blood each day to meet patient needs at 23 area hospitals. Donors of every blood type are needed and welcome.

All those who are eligible to donate are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. To donate blood you must be at least 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in general good health and provide a valid photo ID upon donation.

For information about blood drives, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or visit www.givebloodtoday.org.

Safe Boating Week

National Safe Boating Week is held annually during the third week of May with an effort to alert recreational boaters to practice safe boating, with a strong emphasis on wearing life jackets.

Begun in 1958, Public Law 85-455 authorized President Dwight David Eisenhower to proclaim the week including July 4th as “National Safe Boating Week.” The date was later changed to a seven day period prior to Memorial Day weekend, the start of boating season in many areas of the country.

During National Safe Boating Week, join the Coast Guard Auxiliary in keeping America's waterways safe by ensuring your vessel is compliant with all safety standards.

And remember - to be a survivor – wear your life jacket.
