Historical society to offer children’s theatre workshop

The Pemberville Freedom Area Historical Society will present the first Pemberville Children’s Theatre Workshop this summer.

The workshop is sponsored through the generosity of the Gale and Marlyn Williamson Performing Arts Fund. Marlyn played and taught piano for decades in the Pemberville area and many people came to know of her love of music. The Williamsons enjoyed live performances of all kinds and had a deep love and appreciation for the arts. They were supporters of the restoration of the opera house and enjoyed attending events there. The fund was established by their family to ensure that music and the arts remain a staple of the community for Pemberville’s children.

Twenty students entering third through seventh grade will be cast. Classes will be held Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon June 14 through Aug. 2 in the historic Pemberville Opera House.

Forty-five minutes each week will be devoted to exercises, improvisations and games to build technique. After a short break, the children will begin working on their theatrical production (beginning with auditions the first day), which will culminate in an onstage show open to the public at the Pemberville Opera House.

Applications are available at Beeker's General Store and the Pemberville Public Library and will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The instructor/director will be Angela Patchett, who earned a bachelor of arts degree in theatre from The University of Toledo. She is the theatre and dance instructor at the YMCA Ft. Meigs, Perrysburg.

For information, call Carol Bailey at jaba440@verizon.net or 419-287-4848.

A treat for grandparents

FREMONT - One of the “perks” of becoming a grandparent is providing treats to your grandchildren. The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center turns the tables on that tradition by giving grandparents a treat!

Every Monday during June, July and August, the center will observe Grandparents’ Mondays. All grandparents visiting with their grandchildren on those Mondays receive half-price adult admission to either the Hayes Home or Hayes Museum. That translates to a $3 savings on a single-building admission. Similar savings are available for combination ticket purchases good for admission to both the Home and Museum.

The Hayes Presidential Center includes the 31-room home of 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes, the Hayes Museum & Library and the Hayes Tomb. All are located within 25 acres of the President’s Spiegel Grove estate. Two historic trails run through the wooded, park-like setting, and parking is provided free on site. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays and holidays.

An added feature of visiting the Hayes Museum is entry to an exclusive exhibit, at no additional charge. Now through June 8, visitors can see “The Golden Age of American Political Cartoons.” Beginning June 17 and continuing through Jan. 4, 2009, the Hayes Museum hosts “Patterns from the Past: Quilts of Northern Ohio.” Created by Center staff, the 30 quilts comprising this exhibit reflect the diversity of Ohio 19th-century populace through a mixture of quilting styles and influences.

The Hayes Presidential Center is located at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues. For more information, call 800-998-PRES (out of town) or visit www.rbhayes.org also has updates concerning events.
