Things are looking up at Cedar Point

Things are looking up – literally – for another season of fun at the Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky.

Skyscraper, a new ride that will debut this summer at Cedar Point’s Challenge Park activity complex, spins riders 16 stories into the air at speeds up to 55 mph. The ride features a giant propeller that rotates four riders -- two on each arm -- quickly in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.

Riders are 160 feet above the ground at its highest point. Each ride lasts about two minutes and is captured on a live streaming video that is broadcast to onlookers and can be purchased after the ride. Read Full Story . . .

Q: Dear Dr. Culp, I really need some help. I recently lost my job after being in the printing industry. A career counselor from the local community college told me not to bother with real estate or medical coding-billing, the two areas I’m interested in for a career change, because these fields are slow and people aren't getting jobs. How can I find career help? Thank you. Changing Read Full Story . . .

The Culture Artist

Unfortunately, clothing is more about status these days than about utilitarian value. The more clothes you have with designer names on them, the more status you have in the fashion hierarchy. Thinking about green clothing involves thinking about the purposes that clothing serves in the first place. Is it about comfort? Is it about modesty? Is it about protection from the elements? Is it about looking stylish? Is it about ‘one-upping’ your neighbors? What does clothing mean to you, and how will this affect your own personal definition of ‘green clothing?’ Read Full Story . . .

Take Charge America

The Social Security Administration (www.ssa.gov), was set up in 1935 to provide an income "safety net" for people retiring or unable to work due to disabilities, is one of America's top-rated government programs. A recent survey, known as the American Customer Satisfaction Index of a sample of Social Security's nearly 28 million beneficiaries, found that these citizens, on average, gave the SSA one of the highest ratings ever. Particularly noteworthy were customer comments about the courtesy shown by SSA employees and the timeliness of benefit checks.Read Full Story . . .

Laura on Life

The other night, I was watching a show on TV called Dirty Jobs. This show was, in essence, saluting those people who work at jobs that most of us would consider pretty nasty. Sometimes the host, Mike Rowe, would interview these people and ask questions about the job they are doing. I have never once heard him ask them how they got into this line of work, though. Dear EarthTalk : It is true that the carcasses of whales that wash up on shore are considered dangerous to humans because of the amount of toxins and chemicals in their blubber?

-- Michael O’Loughlin, Tigard, OR

Whether wildlife officials in a given region consider a dead beached whale a biohazard or not is local decision, but nevertheless experts agree that only trained professionals should go anywhere near a dead wild animal to prevent the spread of bacterial infection alone, no matter whether any industrial pollutants might be oozing out. But regardless, it is true that some types of whales, given their spot at the top of the marine food chain, do harbor chemical pollution in their fatty tissue and organs. Read Full Story . . .

The forces within you determine your life’s path

There are two opposing forces within you. One is positive, the other negative. The dominant force is the one that determines the path your life takes. Most people are unaware of this conflict, or worse yet, allow the negative to rule them.

Developing an awareness of your thoughts and emotions is essential to cultivating the positive ones, while allowing the others to wither. Your quality of life is directly related to the outcome of your inner battle.

If you take care of yourself, people may accuse you of being selfish. Read Full Story . . .
