Owens alumni holding ‘Backpack to the Future’ drive

Owens Community College’s Alumni Association is once again organizing a gently-used backpack drive to provide new life for what many students consider their mobile lifeline to learning.

The College’s Alumni Association community service endeavor, “Backpack to the Future,” is accepting gently-used backpacks and new school supplies from area residents during the summer months. Items collected will be given to low-income elementary school children throughout Northwest Ohio.

“ Owens Community College’s Alumni Association is proud to once again coordinate a program benefiting such a worthy cause,” said Kaye Koevenig, Owens Community Service Chair of the Alumni Association. “There are many low-income families that can barely afford to pay their bills and may not be able to provide their children with new supplies. Our goal is to ensure that all children begin their school year with new educational resources.”

In addition to the gently-used backpacks and new backpacks, individuals can donate crayons, markers, bottles of glue, glue sticks, colored pencils, pencils, pink erasers, school boxes, pocket folders, marbled covered composition books and tissues. Donations may be brought to the Office of Alumni Relations.

Since the drive’s inception in 2004, the alumni association has given more than 850 backpacks and more than 12,500 school supplies to benefit disadvantaged children throughout Northwest Ohio.

For more information about the school supply drive or to make a donation, call 567-661-7876, 1-800-GO-OWENS, ext. 7876 or visit alumni@owens.edu.

TU to offer master of education degree online

Tiffin University has been approved by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools to offer the master of education degree in the online format beginning fall semester, according to President Paul Marion.

The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, which was founded in 1895, is one of six regional institutional accreditors in the United States.

The Master of Education is designed for educators interested in furthering their professional education by continued intellectual growth or satisfying state recertification requirements. The program of study has a core of education courses requiring candidates to demonstrate high standards of academic excellence and competency in written analysis. The program will be offered in the online format at this time. As the program grows, it is likely that on-site summer workshops and mid-year short course programs will be offered on the Tiffin campus or at one or more of TU’s academic center locations around the State of Ohio.

"The focus of Tiffin University’s Master of Education Program,” says Dr. Charles Christensen, vice president for Academic Affairs, “is to produce graduates who will maintain and revalidate their skills, certificates, and credentials in the field of education. The program will augment and carry on the standards defined by the No Child Left Behind legislation and the minimum requirements established by the Highly Qualified Teacher Program."

Specific questions about the program may be directed to Dr. Christensen at 419-448-3268 or via e-mail at christensenc@tiffin.edu .
