Fish sale under way

The Ottawa Soil and Water Conservation District’s 2008 Fish Sale, running now through Sept. 12, offers pond owners a convenient and affordable way to stock their ponds.

Fish will be supplied by Fender’s Fish Hatchery of Baltic, Ohio. They will be delivered via a tank truck with aerator Sept. 18.

Fish available include bluegill, channel catfish, largemouth bass, redear sunfish and white amur (commonly known as grass carp). The amur are members of the minnow family and are reported to reach weights in excess of 100 pounds and to live up to 15 years. They bear little resemblance to the common carp. They are primarily used in the U.S. to control aquatic vegetation. Leafy, rooted aquatic plants, such as pondweed and coontail, are the preferred food of these fish. Lacking these, they will consume floating duckweed, green algae and even cattails.

All fish must be pre-ordered and pre-paid. To receive an order form, call 419-898-1595 or visit the district office at 240 W. Lake St., Oak Harbor.

Deadline extended

The Farm Service Agency has announced that the final crop certification reporting date has been extended for the 2008 crop year to Aug. 15.

Previously, the final reporting date was June 30 for small grains and July 15 for all other crops.

The extension for the reporting date was granted because of the delay in announcing the provisions of the 2008 Farm Bill, and extreme weather conditions many producers around the nation have been experiencing.

Crop certification is required by farm producers to maintain most USDA and Farm Service Agency benefits. Producers who do not report planted acreage by the Aug. 15 deadline will not be eligible for USDA benefits. Producers are permitted to file a crop certification report after Aug. 15, however, a late filing fee will be charged. Producers who were prevented from planting their crops due to adverse weather conditions are required to file a prevented planting claim by Aug. 15.

W. Todd Warner, Sandusky County FSA director, said areas of Sandusky County such as York Township have had high water levels in sink holes, preventing some producers from planting their crops.

Sandusky County producers should contact the county FSA to schedule an appointment to report their crops at 419-334-6330.

On average, county producers report 181,200 acres of cropland to the FSA, which includes 83,700 acres of soybeans, 63,000 acres of corn and 19,300 acres of wheat.
