The Village of Elmore is hosting a green energy summit next month to offer the public, business community, and elected officials an opportunity to learn more about the many products and services that save energy and are easier on the environment.

The summit is scheduled for April 15, said Mayor Lowell Krumnow, who’s organizing the event in the hope it will draw local businesses that manufacture or offer green energy, bio-friendly, and energy-efficient products and services.

American Municipal Power, a nonprofit corporation that owns and operates electric facilities that provide generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power to its members, is also a sponsor of the summit.

“Depending on how many vendors are interested we’ll have space in the Elmore Community Building,” he said, adding a luncheon that will include brief speeches may be held in a building used by the Elmore Historical Society. “If we have to put all the vendors in one building and hold the luncheon in another building we can do that.”

Elected officials from four area counties have been invited, he said.

Doors will be open for businesses and elected officials at 9:30 a.m. The luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and the public will be admitted from 12:30-5 p.m.

The village has been holding discussions with a solar energy company on placing a solar field on village-owned property on Dischinger Road, the mayor said.

A representative of the company, which the mayor declined to name, will be invited to speak.

In 2006, the village erected a meteorological tower at the Dischinger Road property as part of a study to determine if the location was a viable site for a permanent turbine.

A year’s worth of data indicated the site could support a wind turbine but the village lacks funding for the project and grants are scarce, the mayor said.

Mayor Krumnow said he’s still interested in pursuing developers for an Energy Star housing development for the village but said such a project will have to wait until the housing market recovers.

Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy to promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
