A grant of $100,000 from FirstEnergy Solutions to Lake Township comes with no strings attached, Tom Hays, township solicitor, informed the township’s trustees last week.

Hays said the township became eligible for the grant by signing an agreement for electric service with the utility through the Northwest Ohio Aggregation Coalition.

The trustees in June agreed to a contract with FirstEnergy for service to homeowners and small businesses that chose to not opt out of the coalition’s agreement with the company.

FirstEnergy announced last month it had signed agreements with 22 area communities that will provide about $7.4 million in grants through the company’s Powering Our Communities program.

The program was made available to 50 communities in the Toledo Edison, Ohio Edison, and Cleveland Electrical Illuminating service areas that agreed to purchase electric service from FirstEnergy through governmental aggregation programs.

Funding levels to each community are based on the number of customers who participate in the aggregation programs.

The township also qualifies for an additional discount in electric costs through an agreement FirstEnergy has with the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The 5.5 percent discount only applies to township-owned buildings, Hays told the trustees before they adopted a resolution authorizing fiscal officer Vicki Schwamberger to contract with the utility for the discounted rate.

Higher costs for the township in another area may be looming on the horizon.

Trustee Melanie Bowen said the cost for health insurance for union and non-union employees next year may increase by 14 percent.

“We will shop around,” she said. “We were hoping for something under double digits.”

The trustees will meet with township employees to discuss any possible change in coverage, she said.
