Oregon Mayor Mike Seferian said he backs the police officer who shot a resident who was involved in a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex on Pickle Road on April 10.

“Although it is unfortunate for a police officer to have to draw his weapon, we believe that, under the circumstances, it was very well executed,” Seferian said at a city council meeting on Monday. “The Oregon police department showed the training and expertise they had and took control of a situation that in all likelihood could have been very bad.”

On Sunday, at approximately 5:12 a.m., Oregon dispatchers sent units to the Piccadilly East Apartments, located in the 2700 block of Pickle Road, and advised officers that there were brothers fighting, one of whom had a firearm, according to Assistant Police Chief Paul Magdich.

At the scene, police Sgt. Jeff Martin saw a man wearing dark pants and a white shirt walking around in the parking lot.

“Jeff had no way of knowing at that time whether he was involved or not,” said Magdich. “As Jeff’s vehicle approached him, without warning, the individual raised a firearm and fired several times at Jeff’s vehicle, striking it at least twice. Jeff backed away from the incident, and got himself into a good position of cover. At that time, officers arrived to assist him. The individual again began approaching the vehicle. He did not respond to officers’ commands.”

When the suspect raised his gun a second time, Officer Don Sekulski, a backup officer, fired three times at him, striking him once before he fell to the ground, said Magdich.

“Even though the individual had been shot once and was on the ground, he maintained possession of the firearm and continued to move it about and put it in the direction of officers,” said Magdich. “Officers maintained cover. A family member of the suspect came up from behind him, removed the gun from his hand, and threw it forward. Officers then moved forward to take possession of the weapon and took control of the scene.”

The suspect, Jeff Belew, 24, was taken into custody and transported by life squad to Toledo St. Vincent Hospital for treatment. No officers were injured.

“The [dash camera] video in the [police] vehicle speaks for itself. If you haven’t seen that yet, I would suggest you look at it,” Magdich told council “It’s very clear that there are several reports from the individual’s weapon as he’s aiming at the vehicle. I have to concur with Mayor Seferian, from initial reports, and from what I’ve seen, what I’ve heard from witness statements, I have to say that the officers behaved very professionally and did an excellent job.”

Magdich also said he contacted Northwood Police Chief Tom Cairl to thank him for assistance from Northwood officers.

“Northwood officers were patrolling in Oregon as much as they were in Northwood. It was very good to know that when we need help, we call for it and they are there to assist us,” said Magdich.

Northwood also provided assistance with a stabbing incident at Cinco De Mayo on Navarre Avenue, said Magdich.

The individual was put on the ground by two or three people, said Magdich.

“To defend himself, he pulled a weapon. That in itself wasn’t necessarily the worst thing in the world. However, when the attackers fled, he chased them down, and that’s when he used the weapon. Officers arrived on the scene. Northwood showed up to help us out and controlled the situation. We were able to get treatment for the injured individuals and arrests were made,” said Magdich.
