Demolition of the tornado-damaged Lake Township administration building on Cummings Road is expected to start this week.

In a special meeting last Wednesday, the township trustees approved a resolution to advertise for letters of interest from architectural and design firms for plans for a new building.

The resolution says the township’s insurance carrier has determined the building is a total loss and will have it demolished to the slab.

Construction on a new building would probably start by next spring, the trustees said.

Melanie Bowen, who chairs the board of trustees, said the insurance company has tentatively agreed to $1.7 million for replacing the building, which was constructed in 1993.

“That may be subject to change,” she said.

In addition to advertising in newspapers, the trustees agreed to send a notice to the Toledo chapter of American Institute of Architecture.

The trustees are confident a new building can be constructed at the same location even if there are some modifications.

“The basic footprint will be the same,” Richard Welling, a trustee said. “We can still use the existing spec work.”

The board is also hoping to utilize green energy alternatives.

Land purchased
The trustees  also agreed to purchase a 9.2-acre parcel for $32,000

Police Chief Mark Hummer has been representing the township in negotiations with the owners of the property, which is adjacent to township-owned property on Lemoyne Road where temporary quarters for the township’s administration building and the police department have been set up.

The police department intends to construct an outdoor shooting range on the newly-purchased parcel, Chief Hummer said.

The township bought Lemoyne Road property from the state last year. It had been the site of the Wood County post of the Ohio Highway Patrol before a new post opened near Bowling Green.

Since the June 5 tornado destroyed the township administration building, the police department and emergency dispatchers have been operating from the former patrol post and the trustees and other administrative offices haven been working from two trailers placed next to the post.

Park plans
The trustees are also racing to have repairs to Friendship Park completed for a Sept. 11 concert sponsored by the township fire department.

Gazebos are scheduled to be delivered to the park by Aug. 2 and the trustees are waiting for contract bids for the rebuilding of restrooms, Bowen said.
