Few people will be waiting for Wood County’s distribution of real estate taxes next year with more apprehension than Vicki Schwamberger.

The Lake Township fiscal officer advised the board of trustees Tuesday that the township’s financial condition was “stable” but she had some reservations about 2010.

The trustees Tuesday approved temporary appropriations for the first quarter of the year totaling $1.92 million – the same amount appropriated for the first three months of this year.

Even with a carry-over in revenues of about $2.3 million to next year, Schwamberger said the trustees will have to be on a tight budget until the township receives its first allocation of property taxes sometime in March.  And even then, with the real estate market still shaky, there is no guarantee revenues will be robust.

“We’ll have to watch our nickels and dimes,” she said, noting the township still owes on a 2007 fire engine.

A check for $100,000 from FirstEnergy Solutions to the township was received Monday, Schwamberger said.

The grant stems from the township signing an agreement for electrical service with the utility through the Northwest Ohio Aggregation Council. FirstEnergy announced in October it would provide grants as part of its Powering Our Communities program if the communities agreed to purchase service through governmental aggregation.

The trustees also received good news from their insurance broker, who said the township could save about $8,200 a year by bundling its dental, life, and vision insurance policies for employees with one provider.

Don Douglas, of Ashley Insurance Group, informed the trustees he’d been negotiating with a provider and was confident the savings could be realized.

In other business, the trustees raised refuse collection rates for 2010 by 25 cents a month to $9.95 a month. The increase is stipulated in the township’s contract with the hauler. Next year marks the final year of the three-year contract.

The trustees also agreed to hold their year-end meeting Dec. 29 at 5:30 p.m.
