If baiting hooks and casting lines are your forte, then the Maumee Bay area offers many wonderful access sites for fishing. The outlook for 2008 looks very promising for the anglers who live in and visit area waterways.

Walleye – Fishing for walleye continues to improve in local rivers. Some limit catches have been reported with most walleye caught being males 18 to 22 inches and a few females at 6 pounds to 10 pounds. Floating jig heads and Carolina rigs with chartreuse or fluorescent orange plastic tails are the recommended baits. After April 30, the daily bag limit is six per day and minimum size is 15 inches. Walleye numbers should increase, especially in the Maumee River as it recedes and the temperature rises.
Yellow Perch – Until further notice, the daily bag limit on Lake Erie is 30 fish per day and no minimum size limit.
Black Bass – Both largemouth and smallmouth daily bag limits are five fish with a 14 inch minimum size limit. Steelhead Trout – Daily bag limit is two. The minimum size limit for steelhead is 12 inches.

During the season, the Ohio department of Natural Resources provides an updated Lake Erie fishing report at ohiodnr.com/wildlife and www.dnr.state.oh.us or by calling 1-888-HOOKFISH. Division of Wildlife staff members are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at Sandusky (419-625-8062) for Western Basin information.
