A second home
To the editor: My name is Gabrielle Matlack, and I am an incoming freshman at Lake High School.
School is my life, and I would consider Lake as my “second home.” This “second home” of mine is where I am growing up, where I learn many lessons and where I found important people who have influenced my dreams and ambitions.
When I hear about the cuts in funding for our school, I can only think about how these cuts will influence our education and other aspects of our school. Therefore, I am writing this letter as a concerned student to encourage your support on the upcoming levy.
Lake offers to us, as students, academic programs as well as extra-curricular activities. Being a student at Lake has taught me about leadership, integrity, teamwork and commitment, to name a few qualities that build character. I am a member of the student council. I aspire to be accepted next year in the Students in Action Club, a national organization that promotes volunteerism and community responsibility. I want everyone to know how wonderful that part of our school is. Students in Action has encouraged me to do more volunteer work, to help others in need and to get more people to volunteer.
I also cannot overlook the teachers and staff who provide the foundation for our education. If it were not for them, we would not have an excellent education, nor have a bright future for college plans.
The school board’s decision to cut positions has been painful for students to watch. It can be prevented from happening again if you can support our wonderful students, staff and school.
We have many great things going on for us at our school. Therefore, I ask you to support us in the levy. Let’s ensure that “teachers can still teach” as Byron Swartz said.
Lake Local Schools has made out many great people, so let’s take a stand, and let our generation have the same impact as the previous generations did.
Our students are involved in our school and love doing so. Look at Katie Swartz’ letter. She is an example of someone who loves her school and loves to be involved. My “second home” means a lot to me, and others. Some letter -writers have encouraged voters to remember the students this August, however, I'd like to take that one step further – “Remember the students and teachers this August.”
